in the last year or so there have been more and more reports of wiped cam lobes with the lifters and cam cores coming out of china(which is almost all of them). Lots of people are choosing to go roller just to prevent destroying a new rebuilt engine with a wiped lobe.

I am certainly not a fan of China anything but wonder if that's a result of using oil designed for late model vehicles? The high zinc oil is more expensive.

No, this is specific classic engine builders using zddp and break-in oil. One of the SBC engine building groups I'm in has had A LOT of reports of it.

One of the reasons I pulled a Vortec engine from a 1997 Suburban.
It is a roller cam engine that will be built for my 1954 Bel Air.

Interesting, is there a way to identify which parts are suspect or just potluck.

I've thought about doing that for the truck, but my big hang up is having to run an electric fuel pump, and cold weather runablity issues with carbed vortec engines some folks report. I'm not try to get off topic here but curious how you plan to mitigate those issues?

No crossover port on the vortec heads... doesn't matter what intake manifold you use, no exhaust crossover means no heat in the manifold and therefore poor cold weather performance. The same thing is true for the L29 454 heads. All of the engines that were using those heads have MPFI, so you don't want the heat in the manifold.

Seems to be anything not specifically made in USA lately. Lots of comp cams lifter and cam failures being reported.

I am not entirely sure that the cold weather issue will be much of a problem.
After all, people are using the hot ticket Air Gap manifolds now a days.
Those do not have the exhaust crossover either.
But how many of those are driven when the weather is cold and gross?

On my old Nova there was no choke, so it took a bit to warm up for a decent idle.
I drove the car through all types of weather with no issues.
But those heads had the exhaust passage in them, so perhaps that is not a comparable engine.

On my '54 I will use a simple electronic pump until I spring for a new tank that has provisions for running an in tank pump system.

For the heads on my car, I plan to use these offerings from AFR.
They are the inexpensive Enforcer series aluminum heads, again like the stock Vortec head not having the exhaust crossover. I will just have to be patient if I want to drive it in colder weather to wait for it to get some heat into the heads and intake. Not to far off of how I warm up my litte 1600cc aircooled engine in my '73 bug before we take off for some driving.

I agree with this. When people talk about "cold weather driveability" I don't apply it to any operation here in the willamette valley. We don't really even get truly below freezing for any amount of time. It will have a tougher time starting up and warming in cold weather.... but for it to be a real problem it will need to be MUCH colder than we usually get around here. If you are getting feet of snow and it is staying near zero temps... you're going to have a bad time with no heat crossover.

plus, im sure you can setup some functional THERMAC if you really wanted. Like maybe needs a custom stove if you have headers but depends if it needs to look pretty lol
