its a 2wd big block 4 speed truck, if its off the pavement there are other issues.
Yes I understand but just throwing out there another consideration for 4x4 dually dudes.

Dual wheel pickups have some financial downsides.
They immediately put you in the next higher class on a toll road in most states as a 10K gvw with dual rear wheels.
They require cab markers which toll booth workers are told to take notice of and charge you the next class.
States,counties, and townships are looking for all the revenue they can collect.

I'd get the dually. If you decide it's a PITA, you can convert it back to SRW fairly easy. This is what I did/am doing.

Hell you may find someone looking to go the other way and trade straight up.

That's the good thing with the crews is they are all on the same frames. So dually or not it shares the same parts.

For a long time, the WV turnpike toll booth workers would just count the lug nuts. 10 lugs put it in the next bracket, which meant that even the GM C4500/5500 trucks only got charged the same rate as a car. But now they have some kind of height sensor and a 4500 cab by itself is the cheap toll, but a truck with any type of head rack or box puts it up to the next highest toll.

Now the PA turnpike is another story. That's just highway robbery (quite literally, lol) no matter what you are driving or pulling.

For towing and highway life, a 2wd dually is the way to go.
Fuel mileage will be approx. the same if not a little better than a 4x4. I assume a 454 with a 4 speed manual?
It will give you more trailer size options as well; bumper or goose neck in case you want to pull more than just your vette.
Less maintenance since you won't have a transfer case or live front axle.

The toll booth operators have been hitting me up for a third axle with this setup. It cost me more to run the pike in a few states than a Lincoln Navigator.

i too, am "struggling" with this decision:

The heaviest i will tow is an 80's monte carlo with open 16' trailer/OR if i can borrow from friends 16' enclosed trailer. So, we're not talking about super high weight.

Could a 3/4 suburban do the trick comfortably (probably), or should i go with a dually crew cab?

If i could muddy the waters further, take a look at this clip:
Notice how both of the 1 ton trucks (i'm ASSuming 1 ton) have extra wide rear tires vs. duallys; Could an extra wide tire provide/equal what dual wheels provide? Probably not in terms of overall stability as the duallys DO have a wider track?

The truck I was looking at was to rusty and to rigged rigged for how he used it so i passed.

I've towed with 2 C20 Suburbans an '88 and a '93. Both had 454's with 4.10 gears. I had a 16' car trailer with a '68 El Camino I towed with no issues. My '88 had a similar rear tire set up to the trucks in the video. That was the rage back in the day. The oem front tires were 8.25-16.5's. They would then run a 12-16.5 in the rear on usually a 9.75" wide wheel. If you are worried about sway, you could always use an equalizer hitch with a sway set up.
