But wouldn't it still be a more reliable connection than a heat shrink type of butt connector?
I feel like most people using these connectors would otherwise be using a butt connector.

put a light coat of flux on the wire before inserting. Either way, better than typical crimp connectors.

Butt connectors are not allowed also. lol
But yes, these are better than butt connectors. I don't know exactly but I'm sure there is a certain amount of time to apply heat to the connector to prevent a cold solder joint.

I twist my wires, or try to and then slide the connector over. It works best with wires on the low gauge of what the connector can handle. On the large side this is not really possible.

These are used heavily in general aviation. The real aviation grade ones are made by raychem and are not cheap. The knockoffs you get on Amazon are still way better than a butt connector and way more convenient than solder and heat shrink separately. The raychem environmental splices have a color stripe on them that will change color when it get hot enough to make the correct connection. They are meant to be done with that little hook end that goes on your heat gun.
