I'm in the process of installing a painless harness into my CUCV with an SM465 swap. I do not see provisions for a neutral safety switch or backup lights. What do folks do to get these working? Is there a switch on the trans that will be closed when I shift I to reverse?

i had to replace the switch on my sm465 to get my reverse lights to activate.

so yes, there is a switch on the sm465 you can 'wire up' to replace/retrofit the switch an automatic used.

good luck

I don't recall a wiring harness or connector on the trans. Where should I be looking?

There are actually 2 swtiches on a Sm465, neutral and backup! I don't know what wire's on the electrical block to hook up. Someone else will chime in. the electrical block is divided in to engine side and rear side on my truck and I'm assuming that these two connectors are on the half that goes to the rear lighting fuel etc. I know I labeled mine but would have to dig them out. Hope the image helps.

Cool. I went back to my photos and see one connector on the top of the driver's side. Now I just have to figure out what connector and which color wires go to it.

this is my 1980. im thinking its either for lighting the shifter of np208 or its for lights. it does run forward to the firewall but it doesnt look like the routing is stock
yellow / black

have thought it to be a 4wd switch, but it doesnt appear to go any further back

Thanks. I guess I'm going to have to find/buy the backup light sub harness or at least the connector. I can't find a NSS connector on the trans. Is there a way to determine the year of the trans based on stamps on the casting?

My clutch does not have a switch or anywhere for one to bolt on.

the pedal, my bad. there should be one mounted on the dash somewhere when the pedal is depressed it breaks a circuit that locks out the starter. the switch changed in the life of the square at one point, i believe to accomdate a.. i cant rememeber. someone said to do something else or perhaps locate elsewhere. i cant remember. i can try to show you where mine is

I understand the concept of the switch. I just do not see any sign of one being installed or where it would install. Does it bolt through the hole in the bottom right of the pivot?

I found my backup light connector by the way. I have two complete, ****** used harnesses. I was looking for it on the wrong one (auto truck).

Run it to a toggle, that way you can turn it on when you need it, get people not to ride your butt when in line and signal to others about a smokey up farther.

Nah. I want it to be as close to stock as possible. I don't like rigging **** together unless I have to.
