Like the manual equivalent to a 700R4? For your application (or for any), I'd highly consider an NV4500 five speed, but it requires synthetic gear oil, and they can be a mite pricey sometimes. Second place an NP833 four speed, but some parts are not easy to find on these. I'd say SM465 if it was a V10 instead of an R10 because they're tough as hell and the L gear is legendary for crawling off-road, but the aforementioned ones would make nice highway gearboxes, I think.

Manual squares either had sm465 as most common or A833. After 91 or 92 gm started using nv3500 and nv4500

Well, Dodge uses them, too, but GM has used New Process/New Venture Gear for a long time. They make the NV4500 with a GM bolt pattern, as they do the 833. These are good products. The 203, 205, 208, and 231 transfer cases are in the all the Square 4x4's, and people love them. I would give it a fair consideration. I mean, it's just a company that got taken in/taken up by a big three manufacturer. Just like Rochester Product Division, Fischer Body, Borg Warner, or Carter Carburetor. And plus, New Venture Gear was a joint operation by GM and Chrysler when they were making the NV4500, I believe.

I forgot about the NV3500. That maybe a good one to look into. It's lighter than the 4500, and it does the same thing. It's just for lighter duty applications than high GVWR trucks or 4x4's. I'll even bet that you can find one in a RWD GMT400 truck. You're not gonna rip and roar through God knows what so you couldn't kill the 3500. That's a more friendly RWD transmission. It's lighter (aluminum), and you retain the modern cruise RPM that the 700R4 gives you. If I were doing a manual swap, that's what I would do. Personally, I would just go through the upgrade instead of fooling with the NP833. Here's s thread where one of our peers swapped an NV3500 into an '86 C10.
