If you would run a digital retard box but that’s usually for boosted applications or rpm based timing curves for staged nitrous set ups in conjunction with some form of manifold pressure sensor way more advanced then you need.

Good evening everyone,

I have been trying to tune my timing for a while now and have read just about every thread on timing there is on here or hotrod.com etc and I am still confused.

My question is when setting my total timing, do I set the RPM that I want the mechanical advance to be all in at and then tune it to 34-36 degrees from that? Or do I just set it to 34-36 at when the mechanical advance stops coming in?

I have a cheap amazon distributor that i have replaced the coil in with a standard GM coil since the one it came with went out

My Pickup seems to drive around fine until I am on the highway cruising at 65 and try to accelerate or go up hill and then I get some ping. Have a 327 with mild cam and current initial timing setting is 14 degrees btdc.

Use a 3/32 allen wrench and stick it in the vacuum canister of the distributor.
Take 1 full turn counter-clockwise and drive. Repeat until ping stops.

It's easy.

What heads, cam, and compression ratio are you running? They play a role in what timing is optimal.

Well one of the problems was my distributor was junk and not producing good spark. Fixed that and seems to be working better. I have 14 initial, 14 vacuum and 21 mechanical. I had it at 12 initial but it seemed to be stuttering in the low rpms range

Not sure about the cam but the heads are the 289 power pack ones I think. I bought the engine on Craigslist and it's a 327 built from a 350 block

I also think I may have a vacuum leak from my brake booster. I replaced it last week, but when I hit the brakes at idle the rpms go up
