Well, seems like I have a pretty high compression motor. I can only run 26-28* total timing. With vacuum advance adding 15* anymore than that and it just rattles like crazy. Might change the heads to one with a bigger chamber.

Currently have the vacuum advance unplugged 16* initial and 21 mechanical for a total of 37 all in by 3k

Read the first nailed-up post in this forum. I wrote it about timing.

You should be 36 or so all in, and no more than 15 or so on vacuum advance. I would back off the mechanical a bit, and back down the vacuum a bit, a degree or two each, and try to keep the base timing up. That's the timing it's running at when you are driving normally and get on it, which is where your ping is.

Ya that's what I ended up doing. I used some heavier springs to slow the mechanical advance down a bit. I have some VORTEC heads coming though to replace the 283 heads so that should help the compression ratio
