Secondary metering rod size?

Also, It appears this truck had new brake lines (Hydroboost) put on it at one point in time. and It had a tow package that literally, after removing the bolts from one side, was so rusted that I just broke the bracket free from the truck.... Where's that at... I'm guessing this truck pulled a big a$$ trailer most of its life

Right on. With regard to the accelerator pump... I meant that putting the air horn on was a pain because of having to hold down the pump and power piston at the same time while installing the air horn.. The little plastic piece that you are talking about is what I think the issue was (maybe)... Because it was different from what I had seen in my learning to rebuild these. My installation was exactly as how you explain yours from what I can remember.
Also, I am looking at a Haynes manual on camshaft inspection... It looks legit on its explanation on how to inspect for a flat lobe. Chevy and Gm Trucks 67 thru 87. Pg. 2A-11 "Camshaft Lobe Lift Check".
the plastic piece serves a dual purpose.. It holds the plunger in place and it is also a stop that prevents the plunger from rising too high.. Since the metering rods are tapered, the higher they rise, the more of the jet orifice is exposed to fuel.. It allows more fuel to flow. If the power valve/plunger is properly installed, and none of it's components are worn out or missing, you don't have to hold it in place while installing the air horn -- the little plastic piece holds all that in place..

are you talking about the plastic piece at the top of the power piston?

Actually yeah, that's what was different! it was black on mine and seemed to interfere with the operation of the thing.... I'm about to rip that d&%$ carb outa there...

Yes...

asside from the usual, that plastic piece wasn't in the kit...


It's a permanent part of the plunger/piston.. It's non-serviceable, doesn't come in the kit.. The only way to remove/replace is to separate the rod hanger from the piston and that's an unequivocal NO-NO.. You don't ever want to "tinker" with the hanger in any way.. Back in my day (I've been away from auto repair for almost 25 years) the power piston was a serviceable part, available over the counter at a GM dealership..

The kit in the picture is for an "ME" carburetor, equipped with a computer controlled duty cycle solenoid controlling fuel mixture. Surely today's kits aren't that universal in applications. I don't remember any GM truck having CCC systems in '85, but if you have that carburetor on your truck now, and have all (or any) the computer controlled devices removed or disconnected, you'll have to get rid of that carburetor along with the distributor and install a conventional carb and distributor.. The "ME" carburetor cannot function as a "stand alone" unit..

That paper was just thrown in there, sort of I had the M4ME or whatever in there too.
