S10 driveshaft replacement question

The u joints arent the issue its the carrier bearing. Aka drive shaft center support bearing.

The carrier bearing just slides right off... it might need a little persuasion, but not much. I thin when I did mine on my C20 it was a little pb blaster and tapping on it from the back side and it popped right off. You have to take the slip yoke apart, make sure you mark both sides so that you put it back together the same way it came apart.

It's not a big deal to have a shop replace it. I have done it numerous times. Once, a day apart, because the "new" driveshaft I used had a dust disc, if you will, and it chewed the rubber dampener on the one I just had them install. That was on me. The second one they installed is still in service 5 years later and has seen at least 20k miles. It won't need to be replaced for who knows how long.

If it is too bad like dingo said, you can basically knock the bearing completely apart and then heat the race with a torch until it expands enough to slide off with a few taps.

Driveline shop said between 5 & 700... nope!

No way! It doesn't take a full day to replace a center bearing. Maybe an hour, tops to remove and press a new one on, but probably more like a half hour tops.

No way! It doesn't take a full day to replace a center bearing. Maybe an hour, tops to remove and press a new one on, but probably more like a half hour tops.

I mean, it took me about 20 minutes for the center support and about 30 minutes each u-joint... by hand with no press. I think i paid $10-15 for the center support and $5 each for the U-joints.. all ACDelco from rockauto.

I wouldn't recommend doing that with it in/on the vehicle. It usually needs to be pressed off, and back on. One time it took 9 tons on the press before the press broke one loose on mine. And to think I was going to try and remove it with a punch and ball peen. Have the shop change the center bearing and then replace the u-joints yourself. Just make sure to mark the shafts with a nice long line on each, as well as the small diameter shaft between the center bearing and the center u-joint before you separate them, otherwise you will have a heck of a time getting them back in tune/time/phase, whatever phrase you may use. You need to mark them no matter what you do if you remove them from the vehicle, that way if they somehow separate you can put them back together correctly.
Never seen one that took that much pressure to get it off. Have seen a few just slip off like @Bextreme04 said. There's always one that'll stick tho. And yes mark the shaft full length if you want, makes it easier to get back together properly.

@idahovette my 2 piece shaft measured as it sits here in the parking lot is 64" center front u to center rear u. And i also measured and find my truck is 118" wheel base
