If the rubber bushing in there is for vibration, just like a rag joint, I guess all the shafts will develop the slop eventually. Or maybe it was just mine because I have them oversized/wide ass tires. Anyways, a couple of good welds and all is good. I'm thinking I want to do the crossover steering thing with hydraulic assist, the get another shaft, see if it holds up longer.

Will this mod work in my 1996 K1500? Also, I heard that another cause of slop could be the steering box??? Is it possible to put a ZQ8 box in this truck to get tighter steering. If so, What would be the best vehicle(s) to pull o0ne of these boxes out of? Thanks

I'd have to see the end of the steering column on a 1996. I have one in my 1989 Sierra and plan to install a ZQ8 box, I think I'll get a remanned one though as they are only $150 or so. 1990-94 were the only years the ZQ8 was offered, as I recall.

Is this box something special or did all the 90-94s come with it ???

I will get some pics of My new shaft tomorrow. Thank You, Thank You, 89. I will try and repay the favor sometime, somehow.

The 1990-94 ZQ8 boxes were a lower ratio, less turns lock to lock.

DDANGIT, I replaced the steering box on My 93 a while back, did`nt know about this orI`da done gone and put one in there. :happy175:

My RTV sealant took a **** and the shaft got all sloppy on the slip joint, so I tack welded the joint last night, fuckit. Feels like a go-cart now, love it. And if some ******** decides to hit me head on, bring it on bitches, finish me off and good luck trying.

Have you tried to drill into one of these shafts? I think I'd try to drill a hole thru both pieces, then use a long aluminum rivet and rivet the 2 pieces together. That aluminum rivet will break away very easy.

Shoot, even a long enough roll pin would do the trick and shear pretty easily.

Hey 89, check out what this guy did to his shaft. He welded a plate on, drilled some holes, tapped them and put 4 bolts to hold the two pieces together.
