Is there a way to tell what gear I have with the Diff cover off?

I never found anyone who could help me. The rear end would pop/snap
like it was busting gears when I turned only. Horrible sound. I took the cover off
today and (DAMN) its gone. The spider gears. $1400 for a rebuild
It looks like it was rebuilt not long ago. See all the yellow on the gears. I bet it
was back yard built by someone who did not do this before!!

I just noticed the bolt that holds the center pin is missing but is not in the housing!

Wtf lol... don't need a bolt if you mushroom both ends of the center pin colored rtv is always the signature of a true craftsman

That was a GM Gov loc diff. Time for a rebuild.

There should be markings on the ring gear that tell you gear ratio. Or just count teeth on ring and pinion and divide. The pin for the cross shaft quite often breaks off when you go to remove it,probe with a pick,I'll bet 1/2 of it is still in the hole. You should heat that area with propane before trying to loosen the pin.

If the pin part of the bolt is still in hole as Rick stated, you can drill it out. Remove just the right side bearing cap, then with a longer drill bit, there is clearance to drill it out.

I wouldn't waste any time or money on that. Buy a 14 bolt and be done with it. If you liked the way it sounded and felt before it grenaded, you'll love a Detroit Locker!

Agree, complete axles in good working condition are just too plentiful and cheap to fck with rebuilding that. ESPECIALLY since you’re not talking diy. You could buy and replace like 4 or 5 of them (not including labor) for what you were quoted for a rebuild. And only have to touch easy bolt on parts like u bolts and brakes.
