So, I keep going back and forth trying to determine which option is the best path: new engine or top-end rebuild. I've leaning more towards the top-end rebuild. I've read enough here to know that going Vortech is the way to go and I don't have a problem with that.

Now here's my question: Once I make the switch to Vortech, upgrade my TBI to a CFM-tech TBI with their spacer and other goodies, and a mild cam upgrade, what are the chances of having to flash the computer to handle the upgrades? I really want to stick with TBI mainly due to its' reliability over carb's.

Thanks!

As long as the cam you choose doesn't affect the vacuum to much you will probably be ok on the reflash. I'm not sure I would agree that the FI is more reliable than the carb though. I've seen some very old carbs that still run great.

...I guess carbs is the way to go if one wants to modify their engine any. Sheesh, I just to to re-do the top-end and exhaust and call it a day.

TBI runs cleaner than a carb; do`nt have to worry so much about gas warshing the cylinder walls and contaminating the oil.
There is some other threads, relating to cam upgrades and TBI, and, the best cam to run without having to do any modifications to the ECM.

Call a couple of the cam manufactors and tell them what you have (TBI) and ask about the largest cam they would reccomend. Install it with the top end rebuild. Put a set of 373 gears and you'll be good to go.

I've actually seen a couple of FI put gas into the oil. A person should see a lot of black smoke with a flooding carb or FI. A properly tuned engine with a carb lacks some technology but should perform very satisfactory.

This is all so overwhelming. It'll be a good while before I can begin dumping money into the engine. Really sucks, I've never had a good performance vehicle and even with a good base to start with, I will still find it difficult to get where I want.
