I had a 2000 VW Golf TDI with the manual transmission. The manual will last longer and give you better fuel economy. Mine had 160,000 miles on it when I started modifying it. I put in newer injectors from a T4 and that alone boosted up power a bit and fuel economy. Next was a Malone tune and some nice stainless exhaust. I was driving it to and from CA to MT for work. 54 mpg and 794 miles on a tank was my record. My front coil springs had broken so bought some progressive H&R springs for it. And a H&R rear sway bar. It actually raised up the front a bit, but made it ride SO much better. Even took a family trip with the wife and I, and the kids with the back loaded with luggage. The springs made it feel so stable.
Then a ******* college kid on bald tires lost control in front of me and that was the end of that car.
