Questions about... My rear end?

Something to consider is that the D60 most likely has 1.31" dia axle shafts so they don't offer much of a strength upgrade over a 1/2 ton axle other than the better weight bearing design of a full floater vs semi floater axle. The ring & pinion is bigger than 1/2 ton and the Power Lock is excellent but if I had both to choose from I'd go with the 14 bolt without hesitation.

Edit: the 14 bolt is going to have roughly a 1.5" dia

The brakes are shot on the rear axle. They are saturated with oil. One side doesn't grab much at all, and the other side locks up, especially when cold. So it just seems easier and cheaper to swap the whole axle. Cuz if i do the brakes, then I would do a complete kit including wheel cylinders. I agree that I could rebuild the axle, but I want to add more lift in the back as well, so it will be unbolted regardless.

Sounds like it would be a better axle for hard core use. My main curiosity is which LSD would work better for what I want to do. I mainly want the best possible rear end traction for getting un-stuck if I am in deep mud, or trying to go uphill from a stop when on snow. I would like to be able to do doughnuts on slick surfaces without the one wheel wonder thing happening, but I also want to be able to take a right had turn from a dead stop with hard acceleration without having the rear end lock up causing the vehicle to spin out of control during the hard acceleration turn. So I guess Im curious as to how these parts will perform under different situations. I though about trying one and then swapping it to the other to test them out, but that seems like a lot of work. Also want to avoid tire hop/churping when taking tight turns on pavement.

You’re want the best of both worlds which is only going to come from an expensive selectable locker that you can turn on & off.

For strength and durability, short of a spool, an open carrier with a Detroit Locker is what you want BUT they default to being locked so they can be unpleasant for some people.

I don’t know what aftermarket limited slip diffs are available for a 14 bolt. The factory Gov Lock (g80) is ok and better than the smaller versions but they’re still a bit delicate for true big tire beat downs.
