hey guys, this Quadrajet has been went through a few times by my cousin, I'm not exactly sure what all he done but I know that he beefs it up a little bit to a higher CFM or whatever. Well I've been fooling with this new engine I've got end adjusting the idle, and trying to figure out which springs works the best to give me the right pedal feel, and I noticed the other day I could smell gas pretty strongly in the engine compartment but could not source of leak, and then today as I'm pulling down my road my engine is idling at like 3000 rpm, so I put it in park and went to put a heavy or spring on the throttle return linkage, but that wasn't the problem. Eventually I started fooling with other things and once I played with this spring that my finger is pointing to, what I guess you would call the secondary openings in the carb, the one on the rear of the carb that are bigger, they kind of moved around a little bit in the engine settle down. But put your head back around the tailpipe and it burns the hell out of your eyes, running very very rich. Is there something I can do tonight to get me until my days off Friday Saturday and Sunday to where I could tear this thing down? I have been reading the Quadrajet threads, & I am going to do some more research in the meantime

Looks like it could use a good cleaning! Spray all the linkage down with carb cleaner and work it all back and forth so you get all the gunk cleaned off.

It sounds like your secondary blades were sticking open. Clean that area good like ogre suggested. You might also loosen the 4 hold down bolts and make sure the base gasket is centered to prevent any contact with the blades.

As far as being rich, do you know what jets and primary rods are in it? What are your engine specs? What is the carb number?

I am going to guess that somebody put in some jets in an effort to beef up the quadrajet and caused the calibrations to be way off.

Ill clean it good tomorrow on my day off, I have no idea what jets or rods are in it but ill call my cousin and ask today what all hes done to it. Hes pretty damn handy with a q jet and this carb has Performed for me for like 6 years trouble free. I think we went through it 2 years ago but not sure what all was done. Id like to start learning how to troubleshoot and build these. ill post back on what the model number is and what he did to it. Btw I drove it to work today, worked that gas pedal pretty hard and it did fine.

Thanks for checking out my website. Ni just redid the site and launched it this week.

My base build for a quadrajet is $225 plus return shipping. I build each specific for the engine specs and driving desire. New jets, primary rods, float, bushings in base plate, high flow needle seat, secondary cam and spring, power piston spring, and more. Performance builds and race builds are a little more if secondary rods or other mods are needed.
I typically stay about two weeks on turnaround time.
