I got the fuel pump today and installed it. Yes the lower pressure worked and it actually ran and idled which is a first. But...it was popping out the carb and when I put a timing light on it the mark on the balancer was here (approximately).

Looks like i'll be pulling the timing gear cover. I verified top dead center on compression stroke and verified distributor #1 pointing at mark on the base and it hadn't moved. I have other timing issues.

Oh yeah. I shut it off and then decided to get a video of the popping, that's when it wouldn't start back up. I ran out of time to really look at it.

sorry to hear about the timing, glad the pump is working so far, once you get to give it a good run I'll look forward to hearing about.

What is the status of the brown wire at that timing mark pictured?
That's around the spot it should be when the wire is connected...I only assume you are NOT using an advance light with a knob or buttons? That picture was with it plugged in, right?
Unplug it and take another picture.

Popping forces me to question the GROUNDS.
The plugs/wires/connections AT the distributor are good? Complete and clean?

-IF! you screwed around and DID NOT replace the in-tank ground wire with the pump, that's a headache waiting to happen and you'll get to go back and do it again.
-The ground wire to the framerail next to the #2 cylinder.
-The ground wire from the battery to the fender
-The ground wire from the driver side cylinder head to the firewall
-The ground wire from the fuel filler next to the frame

Your TBI distributor is NOT prone to "timing issues" and I remain unconvinced. Certainly not several days worth of timing issues..

No chance you are barking up the up the wrong tree?
:hmm:
What is the condition of the gasoline? Is it ancient ethanol or?
Maybe it would be best to STEP BACK and re-evaluate because this does not compute well and aint sittin right with me.

The plugs/wires/connections AT the distributor are good? Complete and clean? New cap, new plug wires, new coil in distributor, new spark plugs

-IF! you screwed around and DID NOT replace the in-tank ground wire with the pump, that's a headache waiting to happen and you'll get to go back and do it again. That wiring is hacked up:(
-The ground wire to the framerail next to the #2 cylinder. New
-The ground wire from the battery to the fender. New
-The ground wire from the driver side cylinder head to the firewall. hooked up, not new
-The ground wire from the fuel filler next to the frame. Not hooked up, i'm running out of a gas can!

What is the condition of the gasoline? Is it ancient ethanol or? Fresh and no ethanol 100% gas:hidesbehindsofa:

PLUS there aren't any pix.
How about a vid? I'm to the point where i'm not asking for help diagnosing this but if anyone has an idea about the popping noise i'm all ears. To me, it sounds like a bad valve, possibly an exhaust valve. Stethoscope didn't narrow it down to a certain spot.

Sounds like valve tap to me.
I think if it was a bad cam lobe or even a lifter, it would be more regular.
My thoughts lead to broken valve spring or a lifter that cant stay pumped up.

Maybe @SirRobyn0 will listen to it.

It IS possible to watch it run and try to spy a valve keeper spinning -

The piston top will have evidence if you could get a look inside without pulling heads.
Little camera thing on a string to peer in the cylinders? They are really cheap.
Certainly one spark plug looks different than the others...

I will look through my ebay purchase history and link the camera I bought.

Here ya go, copy this :

One thing that sucks about listening to noises on a media file is it can be really hard to distinguish suttle sounds in there that might give me an added clue. My instinct is that it is to do with the valve train.

A very important aspect of this is how is it running? If there is a miss accompanying the noise then it's something affecting compression. If no miss then I'd be thinking lifter maybe or tap. Cam lobe possible.

If it's a bad exhaust valve you should be able to hear that noise or at least some muffled version of it at the end of the exhaust pipe. And you likely be able to see it on a compression test. And would definitely be able to see it on a leak down test.

I'll try to rattle off more thoughts if you want me to but you said you don't want help with diagnosing it and I don't want to over step. Just let me know and I'll keep going with thoughts on timing.

You can rattle off more thoughts, I appreciate it. I could always write my issues on paper but posting them here might help others.

I'll pull the fan off the motor and see if I can get a better vid without air noise.

Hopefully this will help. I removed the fan so I could get closer without the air noise.
