Years ago, had an Eaton Detroit Tru-Trac installed, all new bearings and one new axle, by Robert Thomas in Hesperia, CA...really good stuff. All gears...No posi lube required.

I just put an eaton clutch type posi in my 10 bolt 3:42 30 spline rear earlier in the year. So far so good. I should correct myself... i swapped my 12 bolt to a 10 bolt and swapped in my 30 splines and brake setup with the aftermarket posi.

I also have the eaton clutch type posi in my 12bolt rear end. Works as it should and chirps the tires when going around tight corners. I only drive streets , dirt road and very mild offroad. For hard offroad use I would recommend something different.

'86 should be 28-spline. I think the 30-spline started in '89. IIRC. Some say late '88 model could have the 30's but mainly '89. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

My posi unit was only 300. I bought the 10 bolt rear and put my 30 splines and brakes and posi in but left the 3:42 gears

If the rear end is in good shape, works as it should and not whining, then you might consider a lunchbox locker if it's fairly stock. The advantage to a lunchbox locker is you don't have to reset up your gear lash and all of that good stuff. Lunchbox locker is pretty much just a spider gear replacement directly into that same open carrier. PowerTraxx by Richmond Gear makes one called Lock Right, Yukon also makes one. Do keep in mind though, it's a Locker so both wheels are locked up at all times until you turn a corner and one axle has to break free from the locker so it can make a bit of noise. The Posi or Limited slip unit is always a one wheel peg legger until slip is detected, then it'll grab the other axle to help propel the truck. Pros and Cons to both systems.

I have a true Trac in mine and love it ... and as the other guys stated ... nofriction modifier or clutchs to go bad ... I am had on my truck and it's always posi ... but the 1-.5 ration allows for cornering with out chirping ... unless the skinny peddle is used then it's sideways... mines in a 8.5 with 28s at a 3.08 ratio gears for days... want to swap to 3.73s for better crawling

I'm partial to the clutching units, Eaton and similar. That being said the Tru Trac looks to be well made and seems very strong. I've installed an sload of them over the last several years wiyh no problems. The lockers I'd stay away from, on a street driver. I have a Detroit Locker in my truck, not a big fan until your in a situation off road.
