Basic OEM style sun shell. Gross, and disappointing really.

Does it say on the sticker on the case, when Hughes built that thing?

Using a round hole rev input drum when the third design square hole was available would have been odd.

I'm curious as to what valve body, accumulator mods were performed.

Is this an aux valve body trans (87-93)?

Were there two valve body check balls or just one?

How many .25" case check balls were installed?

Did the forward drum pass a pressure test?

Using a round hole rev input drum when the third design square hole was available would have been odd. Cost saving, maybe?

I'm curious as to what valve body, accumulator mods were performed. Will be posting details soon

Is this an aux valve body trans (87-93)? Yes

Were there two valve body check balls or just one? One

How many .25" case check balls were installed? 3, and the captured check ball is removed

Did the forward drum pass a pressure test? Haven't tested yet

@Wumbo - For some reason this website isn't letting me quote but the round hole rev input drums are obsolete so yea, was def a cost cutting measure...Not the end of the world, just odd to see in one of their transmissions...Also odd to see Z-pack as it's the one Raybestos product that is complete garbage.

So far, from what I can make out on your parts table, your build is shaping up to be much more of a high performance build than what that unit received from Hughes...

Looking forward to more pics as you progress...let me know if you run into any issues along the way.

Thanks Nick

I started assembly on the input drum last week, installed new bonded pistons and Transgo 7-CS return springs and orifice. Forward clutch clearance was only .005, so I had to order a thinner apply plate. It showed up today, so I had to install it. Forward clearance is .035 now.

Naturally, I installed the 3-4 clutch stack as well. Sonnax lists eight .067" frictions with seven .095" steels or nine .062" frictions with eight .077" steels as recommended clutch combinations.

I'm in the thicker is better camp, so I went with the first option.

Eight .067 frictions and seven .095 steels has me at .070 clearance. I think I want to be around .040, so I'm going to use some .080 frictions to get closer.

Did some assembly

Sonnax reaction shaft, OEM 5 pinion planet from 4l65E. I initially planned to reuse the reaction shaft from the 65E, but it was too worn where it meshes with the ring gear.

New 29 element Borg Warner sprag, and Sonnax heavy duty overrun hub

Big money

Sonnax input drum and input shaft. Borg Warner frictions, lindered 3/4 steels, plain steels in overrun and forward clutch packs.

I swapped out two .067 frictions with .080 frictions and the 3/4 clutch clearance came in at .045.

Leak tested good

The old drum also leak tested good, next thing I'm looking at is the third accumulator check ball capsule.

New OEM reverse input drum, new frictions and steels.

New Borg Warner low roller clutch, and Sonnax smart shell race.

Sonnax wide sun gear bushing, and quick and dirty lube mod to sun gears. (I wanted to cut grooves on my Bridgeport, but didn't want to wake the neighbors, so used a grinder and cutoff wheel)

Third accumulator check ball capsule leaks like it isnt even there.

Shot some brake fluid through it and that helped, but it's getting replaced.

Those rarely leak...try tapping it with a drift to reseat the check ball to see if it stops leaking...If not, replacement is easy as I'm sure you know.
