Hi,I I have an 84 k10 with a 383 stroker,the other day I was driving it and knocked the water pump v belt off and over heated it, before that happened the engine ran about 160° but ever since then after I replaced the belt now it will idle at 210 and if I drive it it goes to 230 with a 195 thermostat in it (I've tried two thermostats and same thing) but If I take the thermostat out it will run at 150 to 160.any help would be much appreciated

Are you still using a fan clutch? Check that if you are to see if its bad. I'd also check to see if the fan blades to see if the thrown belt ruined any of them.

I think 160* is too cool. I’d verify temp at the head when it’s idling and compare it to your gauge. The water pump is okay? It’s not leaking out of the weep holes, groaning, or seizing up?

Oh, the fan/clutch suggestion is a really good one.

That seems really cool for an engine temp. My experience if you remove the thermostat the engine temp increases because the water pump will circulate the water thru the radiator too fast. Not allowing time for the radiator to cool the water. That's the thermostat's job! Hotter thermostat will open farther than a cooler one. :shrug:

But then again I might be wrong.

When I ran without a thermostat on my race car, i tore the guts out of the thermostat and just put the empty plate back in to slow down the circulation.

Your mileage may vary.

I don't have a clutch on my fan I have a solid mount to the water pump and I have a flex fan that all the blades look good on,do you think the water pump could be bad and just doesn't have the water flow to push through the thermostat?and it doesn't leak any coolant

The impellers may look good, but the bearings may starting to go? When heated, it's possible. Might be the reason it threw the belt off in the 1st place.

The pump doesn't push coolant through the thermostat, it technically pumps it through the engine, the heated wax in the thermostat is what opens or closes its passage. Exactly what 82sbshortbed stated is its function.

So to answer your question, it can't hurt to replace it. Only go with good quality. They aren't that expensive and it may be extra assurance that the engine is saved.

Thanks for all the help,I did notice some cracks on the belt a couple days before but didn't have time to make it to the parts store,but I think I'm gonna try buying a thermostat and seeing if that fixes it,should I try going with like a 180° thermostat this time or just another 195°
