Sorry hotrodpc, the 3/4 ton axle I was talking about is one that I was hoping to buy and put under my truck. Mine right now has a 10 bolt front and rear.

Ahhh, OK, we're crossing in posts here. Then you'll have to do some welding work to get that one to work in your truck. You might want to hold off on buying it if that's the case. It can end up very expensive. If you want to do this upgrade now, then you're better off getting a rear end out of a squarebody, ready to bolt in. I'll see if I can dig up the thread that explains and shows the difference in 14 bolt Semi Float and the 14 bolt Full Float.

Hey, While we're on this subject and I don't have to hijack a thread, I can simply step in, on a CUCV that is rated 1.25 ton, the 14 bolt Full Floater rear end that comes OEM with 4.56 gears and the Detroit Locker, isn't that perch spacing the same as a 3/4 ton and the shock mounts too??? Basic simple swap with 3/4 ton squarebodies isn't it?

Nope, it's just a 1 ton rear axle. I just go ahead and take it off your hands then since you don't want to weld, it will bolt right into my Burb :)

I believe it's a stock rear end, but I'm not worried about it anymore anyways since it won't be a direct bolt on. When I look for a rear end, would a full float be better than a semi float?

Yes, For sure. Go full float if you are going D60 and have to 8 lug it anyway. The 14 FF is the strongest of the strong. Some say it's got the strength of a Dana 70, some say its stronger than a Dana 60 and just under the Dana 70. Nonetheless, you'll have a hard time trying to break it.

Here is the ID link between the 2, FF and SF.

Uhhh NO, if it don't bolt in, I'll just move the carrier, R&P to another housing. Sorry. No can do !!! Thanks for the offer to haul off some of my junk though.

Thanks for the info on the SF and FF. What would be a good price to pay for a Dana 60 and 14FF? I've seen some sets on Craigslist but they want in between 900 and 1500 for the set. Too much?

That is right about what they cost. You can pick up the 14 bolt by itself for $150-$300 but the D60 in good shape and set up as SRW does go for ~$1,000

Yep, but what you can do for now, is find the 14bolt Full Float you want. 4.10 are most common, and 3.73 are pretty common too. So lets say you find a 4.10 FF for $200. Jump on it. Ideally, what you might find is a set, 14ff and a 10 bolt or D44 front already set up for 8 lug for say $350-$400. I'm a cheap ass, I say $300 $200 for the 14b and $100 for the 10 bolt of Dana 44 and use them until you save enough for the D60. Or just grab a 14b FF, then get some 4.10's for your front and convert it to 8 lug, still cheaper just to buy a set of axles that are both already 8 lug. Keep in mind, you'll need some 8 lug wheels too, so don't go spending money on new wheels yet.

Sounds great. I've been looking on craigslist around here for a set of axles and not having too much luck. Guess I'll have to keep looking! Thanks for the reply, you've really helped me out a lot and given me some really good information.

Be patient and keep a close eye. I even bought a whole truck once for $300 jsut for the axles. It was a rust bucket with no motor, but it was worth it for axles. Sold other parts scrapped the rest and ended up with FREE axles with what I sold and scrapped.

I paid 500 bucks for this 83. Guy told me it didn't run and the transmission was crap. I checked it out anyways figuring I had a different motor/trans to drop in. Drove 40 miles to check it out and found a really nice truck. One dent in the passenger side fender and faded paint, but other than that a beautiful truck. Took it home and sprayed some carb cleaner on it, and after about three attempts it started right up. Transmission shifts fine, but the motor has an oil leak (again the little 305 is comin out anyways). And ya I'm gonna keep lookin. Hopefully I'll have everything done by the end of next summer if all goes well.

Cool !! I like those $500 trucks. Of course I like the $100 ones better. $200 was most I've paid for my trucks until I bought my K1500 for $500 that had a new GM crate motor in it with less than 10K miles on it. It only 1, 2 and R, no 3rd of 4th gear.

Man wish I could find more deals like that down here! Most people think just because it's an old vehicle it's worth 5 times than what it actually is. I had been wanting a square body for a long time. I've always liked these body styles as well as the 88-98 body styles. Thank you again for all your help and input. It's hard to find people now a days that are willing to give advice and help out, especially a kid my age.

Not around here. Hang out, you'll get more help than you can handle. You'll just have to tolerate some of our craziness. Not all threads are stricktly helpful and on topic, but we try. And if you enter the Lounge area, there's no telling what you might see or read. I forget which thread it is where Retro is talking about his satin thong that he wears, and WildcatJason wears panties. :happy175:
