I've had 2 5.3's in an '04 Silverado that I ran from brand new to 225,000 and currently have a '12 Silverado with 202,000 miles on it. The '04 always had the telltale piston slap at cold start up and wouldn't use much oil (1/4-1/2 quart) until about 2,500-3,000 miles into an oil change and then it'd drink a quart roughly every 1,000 miles religiously from then until I changed the oil. Change the oil and filter and boom, barely move on the stick until the magic 2,500 mile-ish mark and she'd start drinking it again. The '12 has barely noticeable piston slap at cold start up and just steadily drinks it between oil changes to the tune of about a quart every 2,500 miles. Neither engine ever had any leaks or has any leaks. The '12 with the AFM has a noticeably dirty/sooty tailpipe and i've always chalked it up to the AFM. but it does get better gas mileage than my '04 ever did. About 16.7 mpg if I drive conservatively compared to if I remember correctly about 15. Other than that, they've been reliable and pretty bulletproof.

My ‘16 would drink a couple quarts between oil changes. The ‘20 uses about a quart.
The old 01 we had didn’t drink oil like this one does.

It’s on the list. Wish I didn’t have more pressing things going on…
