Cat as in catalytic converter. You shouldn't have one on a 73 but since the PO did an engine swap it wouldn't hurt to check.
Also check the gaskets for the fuel pump if you have a mechanical fuel pump. My truck would have a similar issue because it would blow out the gasket on the fuel pump. It would idle fine but when I gave it gas it would suck more air the gas and bog down and die

My trans is new just put in. It was getting around 12mpg and the worse the problem got the worse my mileage seemed to get and my test drive last night was maybe 15 miles and it drank almost a quarter tank.

Anyone think a coil could give these symptoms?

Timing no clue. Where it's been since it ran perfect havnt touched it. Just replaced the coil, the readings on the old one were off a bit. Helped alittle, drivable but still not better

Any chance it's a lifter sticking?

Lifter sticking would run real bad. I'd start with the timing. Try removing the vac advance hose and plug it then go for a drive.

Same thing started bogging down about 40 in 2nd. Up to 3rd. Difference this time was if I kept my foot in the gas a bit I could still speed up slowly. Before I lost all power completely.
Evens out about 60 and now on the freeway it stopped bogging down. Very intermittent.
