I don’t know the actual reason, but 80’s long beds with a single tank got a 20 gallon tank. Longbeds with dual tanks got dual 16 gallon tanks, unless if it was over 8600GVWR? (CP6?), then dual 20 gallon tanks.

Yup, our '81 Sierra shop truck had dual 16 gallon tanks, from the factory. The '78 had dual 20s. Both were C15 long bed GMC.

I thought that the dual tank option got you 16gal tanks, then the 20gal tanks were an option on top of that.

Oh yeah, I forgot. I believe the 16 gallon single tank was also standard on an 80's longbed truck. My buddy had an '84 set up that way, iirc it was original.

I got that information from the 1984 brochure, I’m not sure if that could have been overrode to get dual 20 gallon tanks. Also I see it is C6P, not CP6 for the RPO.

I live the simple life with my 76, longbed = 20 gallon tanks. Single or dual lol.

Do you suppose in the early '80s when they were doing everything they could to increase fuel economy, they used the 16 gallon vs 20 gallon tanks to help cut weight? Just a thought since they also did things like lighten up the glass and the sheet metal too starting in '81.

That’s sort of what I was thinking, to help with achieving CAFE or emissions standards.

My 85 K-10 has dual 20-gallon tanks. I am in the process of replacing the pass. side. I removed it a few months ago. Now I am waiting on better weather. I wonder if they were part of the Sequoia Special YH6 option?

Interesting, can’t comment on the Sequoia Special part, but that is an impressive SPID sheet(s)!

Between my family (4 of us buying truck) and my best friends family (6 of them) we had at least 3 dozen of these 81-87 trucks (at least a dozen being bought new), with over 1/2 of those 1/2 tons being long wheel base, and until just a few years ago, had never seen a lwb with short factory tanks.

Regional thing maybe? Just seems to be no rhyme or reason to it, in my opinion.
