I will let you know for sure soon, some time this week about those manifolds, thanks again.

I just got my truck ready to pull the transmission and slid my new setup under the truck when I noticed... The god damn thing is so tall I will have to jack my truck up to about 3 feet off the ground to get the transmission to clear!

Narrowed it down to 3 options, maybe some input here.

#1: Buy 2 more cinder blocks and gain another 8 inches or so, possibly still not enough to clear so the trans can come out.

#2: Lower the Trans/Transfer case down under the truck and try to work it off the jack by hand and drag out.

This is going to be a pain in the ass, I can tell already. Harbor freights transmission jack adapter is a stupid design, its way way way to tall to be usefull. Right now my front tires are up on cinder blocks giving me plenty of room for the trans to come out but the transmission jack is so tall the deck is 4 inches below the frame rail.

Take out the bench seat.
Take out the trans hump.
Roll down windows.
Find a 2x6 long enough to reach from one door to the other, across the window jambs.
Use a choker around the 2x6 and a come-along to support the trans/t-case while you remove the crossmember and unbolt the trans/drivelines.
Drop it down on a piece of plywood or something you can scoot out from under it easily (old creeper?).

A 4x4 on top of the 2x6 would help carry the weight, the 2x6 is just to help spread the load so it doesnt dent the doors.

That is an excellent idea, only problem is my truck has no removable hump haha. This job is more than I expected.

I can't beleive its that hard to take out. Now you do know the stick can be taken off right? I know sounds dumb, but just checking to make sure you are doing that. Sounds like you got the wrong trans jack. I have a HF trans jack, and love the thing, and so does everyone that has borrowed it. I'm wanting to say I got this thing on sale for $49, then used a 20% off coupon on top of that. Can't recall for sure now, other than I know I got a good deal on it, and its been worth every cent of it. One of those HF items I would recommend to anyone working on transmission R&R without a lift.

This particular job is turning into a pain in the ass. There is plenty of room under the truck for the whole thing to come out no problem but the setup I got is way tall. I will make it work one way or another.

The shifter is out, everything is disconnected and all bolts broken loose, Tomarrow I will look into the low profile jack instead of this floor jack adapter ********.

Will that balance and hold my 465+transfer case in your opinion? If so I will go exchange my crappy adapter plate and get that one.
Never thought of that. Not sure, I have not pulled a Tcase/Trans combo yet with it. I's say if the Trans and Tcase are real close in height, or fairly level with each other, then I'd think so. part of the Tcase and part of the trans on the base. The strap works well too. So maybe if you can get the trans on the jack, and strap it to the jack, then the Tcase hang off the back. Hopefully it wouldn't make the jack wanna pop a wheelie. I would be best if you get a piece of bout the trans and tcase on the jack then strap it, even if you have to use a short 2x4 of something to make them bout the same height. I know crappy description of what I am trying to say, but I think it can be done, although I have never tried it.

It looks like that might just work. I think I understand your idea with the 2x4, Im going to pick one up tomorrow, I think it will work.

do you raise and lower it with a 3/8s ratchet? If i could get this jack to balance everything I think it will work better with its little caster wheels.

If I cant balance it I have a extra small floor jack I could support the tail housing with, I was going to use it to support the engine but I think I will use a ratchet strap in place. Maybe go from frame rail to rail and pick up the engine from the oil pan. Still adjustable up and down.

Uses a 1/2 inch drive ratchet. I actually use a ratchet with a 3 or 6 inch extension, depending where I am laying and my reach. When it gets heavy, it does take both hands to lift it. One to steady the ratchet and extension, and one to turn it.

This thing is heavier than I thought, I went ahead with the stuff I already have and its pretty damn scary how heavy this **** is. Transmission started uncoupling from the bellhousing and luckily the post on the transmission where the shifter goes caught on the hole in my floor board.

THis is going to be an interesting job.

Transmission is out and to my surprise the shafts are totally different. Son of a bitch. The transmission I pulled out has an output shaft about a foot long and the one I have to replace it has a output shaft about 3 inches long. At a loss now.

I pulled the cover off of the bad transmission and everything looked suprisingly good, when I turn the shaft by hand you can hear it making bad noises. Anyone know of adapters that could help me in this?

This is a 4x4 truck right? That long shaft or cone setup looking thing is your Transfer Case adapter. So did you possibly buy a 2WD SM465 instead of a 4x4 SM465? I am not even sure myself. But someone who knows may chime in. I wonder if the Tcase adapter has its own shaft and will it work simpley by swapping the trans case adapter from one trans to the other.

This is a very cruddy pic, but its the one the guy had on CL, and I bought this one for $50. Notice the long cone on the back of it. That is just the Tcase adapter. A 2wd unit would probably just have a yoke on the back of it.

The transmission I bought was definetly a 4x4 unit since I watched him uncouple it from a np205 transfer case. The main shafts are way different, The good one I bought had a little coupler that just slipped onto the shaft between the transfer case and transmission, the one I need goes directly into the transfer case.

I called the dude and explained why I cant use it and he said he has buddy with a sm465 He just pulled out of his 85 with a super long shaft like mine, I will go pick it up around noon tomarrow for 100 bucks.

he said he would sell me the np205 that goes with it for 150 and I could find the drive line in his backyard which sounds tempting... I would rather just find a direct replacement for my trans at this point and get it put back together instead of chasing down drive lines and U-joints and ********.
