This weekend im going to be looking at a 79 k10 with a rebuilt 355 and detroit lockers front and rear. I'm wanting to know of any specific problems these trucks have. ive read that the np203 is chain drive and is full time 4x4 and that there is a kit to make it part time. how can i tell if it has that kit installed? thanks in advance for any advice!

Other than the bodys rusting off them, they were real good old trucks. chains get sloppy in transfer cases, but still work along time after that.

This was discussed before about investigating if a part time kit was installed. If there is a set of locking hubs on it that is one clue. If they are on there, leave the front hubs unlocked and put it in 4-Hi (Not 4-Loc). If the truck moves it's got the kit.

frame rail cracking.

check it.

alot of them are right behind the steering box on the frame, or around the shocks front or rear.

not sure on the t-case because it's all internals from what I know and would not be able to tell without driving it.

you should be able to spin the front drive shaft by hand if it has the kit... i have a 203 w/ a part time kit in mine... i like it, i can leave the front hubs locked and drive around in 2x4 then shift to 4x4 on the fly and go off road... youll lose 4hi though... 4loloc-4lo-n-2hi-4hiloc...
i like mine... just need to make sure you run the 4x4 once a month to keep everything lubed... i dont know about chain stretch yet, i havent opened mine up to check it

im willing to bet if its got lockers front and rear, the po most likely did the kit
