hopped up L31 waiting for a hot 400
Hey guys, so some of you on the forum have seen my last post and gave me insight towards my 400 build and i greatly appreciate it. Due to money reasons that build was put on hold and i pulled a full l31 from a 97 2500 last week, tore it down and have big LOW BUDGET plans for this 350. Now i have just about everything and a lot of this was planned for my 400 so when it does come time for that i will have a complete new top end, Im getting AFR heads for that when the time comes and i will need just about everything in between. This thread is more for reading than insight, but i would deffinantly appreciate any comments!
Here's a list of what i have and what is already pretty much done:

I had L&R clean and assemble the heads and i got their stage 2 port and polish. I also had the balve guides machined down for the extra lift my cam is throwing at it.

Block
So for the block I am putting it together with my friend in my garage the bores are able to reuse the stock pistons but i am dumping them and going with .30 over speed pro hypereutectic negative dome pistons. My friends handling the boring and is walking me through the engin assembley. i will be around 10:1 compression ratio with them besides that im changing the rings and bearings and then throwing in the stock rods and crank. I had the rods machined due to wear and had both the crank and rods cleaned polished and shotpeened.

i may run e85 on it or 91 im still undecided so far.

i have a weiland speed warrior intake mani flows to 6700 and a new 600 cfm edelbrock i am going to build up also and headman longtubes with a 3 inch collector

Thats bassicly everything theres probably a few un named parts but mainly thats whats going in to my budget 350 and its going to end up being a 355 rebuilt l31 i dont have any projected numbers but im guessing 400-475 crank and thats plenty for my c20 till i finish the 400 i just really want it on the road and it will be in the next few weeks. once the engine is in i will need a half driveshaft to connect to my 700r4 since im cinverting from a th400 and im rebuilding my 14bolt with 4.10s and a posi! ill be back with some numbers and drag times forsure when shes all ready and running!

The cam's rpm band will be 3,000 to 6,500 in a 355 (will come on good after 3,500 rpm), their's must be a typo @ 1,500 to 6,500.
A 600 cfm carb ? Budget ? The cam kit alone is $840 !!

Make sure the springs you buy will work with the cam you buy, I don't think the ones listed match the cam.

Your combo isn't something setup for E85 really, it does take a dedicated carb built just for E85 and you'd want alot more compression also.

Vortec heads don't need a ton of work to make power. Stock valves are fine. Get comp cams beehive LS springs, cut down the guides for lift clearance, and clean up the exhaust ports and bowls. DO NOT touch the intake runners. They have a texture that is key to their performance.
Use a modest cam for the factory roller motors, maybe $300. Keep lift under .600, add self aligning roller rockers, and you're done.
Now deck the block to reduce quench to about .020, and choose a gasket that gives you a nice compression ratio.
Don't over complicate it. There are three or four magazine articles online that will get better than 400hp out of an L31 on the cheap.

I had all of the valves valve springs and cam and all of that before i posted budget so that might help to add. by budget i mean i have a cleaned polished and shotpeened crank rods and new pistons rings and bearings all on a tight budget i got speedpros like i said and am doing the block at home and all assembley and boring and honing with the help of my friend in my garage. L&R assembled the heads and did all of the machining on them and hot tanked and magnufluxed the block and decked it and we are taking it from here. all and all the only expensive thing i have in this engine is the cam kit like you said and i could have used a cheaper cam i just had this one i was going to use on my 400. all of the machining is done on my heads the valveguides are machined for my cam lift and they are 100% assembled ported polished and ready to go. the block is decked and im actually going to be around 11.1 compression rather than 10.1 brcause of that. i have to pick up he block from l&r on monday. i did use a carcraft add as an idea on my engine yes but i had everything from the cam up already to start with before i pulled the engine. its also looking like im going to run 91 too i would just like to run e85 and am going to talk with the tuner i decide. i live in socal and am going to have it engine dynod and broken in for me once its all assembled. i got the new edelbrock 600 for a bill and am going to have it tuned thats why i went with this carb otherwise id have a dominater but im on a budget now lol.
