My 454 build

So the 454 in my '74 knocked forever before recently locking up. I didn't care so much, because i have a complete 454 that originally came out of an early 80's RV. I finally picked up the engine and disassembled it to the shortblock.

It had peanut heads, which isn't a big deal since I'm using the 781's currently residing on my 74 after some working-over with big valves. I didn't luck out with a steel crank or 4 bolt mains either, BUT it does have the heavy duty "thumb" rods i was hoping for, being an RV engine.


Here's the plan so far:

- massaged 781 heads
- hypereutectic domes 9-9.5:1
- air gap copy
- 850 double-pumper with annular boosters
- cheap longtubes
- 4/7 2/3 solid roller custom grind from Lunati.

Camming it for maximum torque everywhere

I might go back with a Rochester if i don't like the tempermental nature of the Holley.

Yes. I may forego the headwork and just leave the stock valves in favor of a 4.25 crank.

Been reading a lot about the peanuts I got a set of 236s that came with the block a lot of good low end tq higher than most aluminums they just fall off at 4600-5000 rpm but hell in a truck!? But found a set of 049s ready to go ported - all roller for 500$ may go that route rather than build the peanuts up what do y'all think?

Definitely go with the ovals if they already installed the big valves. Ovals supposedly have the same low/mid torque as peanuts without falling flat at 5k. I'm probably not even doing any port work on my 781's. Just big valves and done.

For any anyone didn't know, the 049 and 781's are the same head except for the chambers, the 049 has 122cc's and the 781 has 118cc's and will make a difference in compression..

That is correct, that and head gasket thickness can help get you where you want in compression..
