Oh yeah, and IT WORKED! No more noise! I drove around town for 20 minutes or so, listening closely, and.. I've done it! I've fixed the truck!! :D

I guess I should assume that the lifespan of the differential will be greatly reduced. But, for now, I'm happy.

What do you think about the damage to the carrier and the bits of metal in the oil? Is that a significant amount that would warrant a major freakout? The oil looked really new, but like it had metal flake in it. It didn't smell and was mostly clear still. I've seen pics of old diff oil that looked like mud.

And, from the pics, can you tell what kind of diff it is? Is it an open diff or LSD?

I think you'll be ok but it all depends on if the pinon adjustment is still good. I'd do the same thing you did though. Make sure you clean it out good.

It's an open diff, and the wear isn't that horrible but definitely not normal. I would just keep it in the back of your mind when you drive it, don't worry about it, just don't forget about it!
