Hi Guys, I’ve got a 1974 C20 11” drums and I disassembled them to check brakes and bearings. Upon inspection and reviewing the service manual it appears I’m short a retaining ring on both sides. Disassembly was one retaining nut, a tanged retainer and then a retaining nut and flat washer with tang.
The manual says there should be a retainer on the outside retaining nut but I don’t have that. It would seem logical that the outside retaining nut should have the retainer. Has anyone disassembled one of these? The service manual says there is a retainer for the outside nut.
Have looked in various catalogs without success. Any help or insight would be appreciated.

Can you get a picture of the service manual where it mentions the retaining ring?

Hi Spencer, I have the 74 service manual lt shows only 1 retaining ring. The text however is quite clear about bending the long tab of the retainer into a slot of the outer nut……
I may have just answered my own question. The one retainer is used for both retaining nuts. Let me try that otherwise I’ll be back. Thanks for the reply Spenser

It should be the the outer bearing, washer, nut, retainer, outer nut as far as the stack up is concerned.

The bent “fingers” should go towards the carrier, grabbing the inner nut, then one of the circled tabs bent over the outer nut.

GM part number: 3663659 in case anyone might need to source one, still available as new or NOS parts.

Thank you very much. I finally figured it out just as you describe. Sometimes I just need push. Been an ASE for 50 years and still learn everyday. Joe
