Looked at this one today. Two years ago the 17 year old who was driving decided on a 383 swap. I was told that he’d only made it as far as removing the radiator and there were no batteries. I went down with a couple batteries, rad hoses, some coolant, fuel and tools.

Unfortunately he’d cut the trans lines, engine oil cooler lines, radiator hoses, there was a hole in the radiator, missing battery tray, and the interior was a mess. Other thing I was worried about is that the oil had been drained and the drain plug was left out for two years.

All stuff we’d work with, but they wouldn’t budge on the price. They were asking $5k, we offered $4k because we were unable to hear it run due to the oil cooler lines issue and no parts to loop it. They were quite a ways out of town with no parts stores around. Unfortunately, this was a 10 hour round trip to go look at it. I’d like to know it’s a runner and the transmission works prior to making an offer.

Btw @bucket , it was a 700r4 and the spid showed it as original equipment. Early 700 operated by a 17 year old had me a bit concerned too.

We may expand our search to gas suburbans. A SBC with an OD 4 spd will be easier to find. Gas mileage will be 25-30% worse, but I’m not sure makes up for the things that scare me about a 6.2 either.

Who knows…It seems that people aren’t very good about listings anymore. There always seems to be much more wrong with the vehicle than was conveyed. This will be a battle of numbers. I need to see everything within a 30 mile radius. I don’t think we’ll go very far out of our way to look from here on out.

Gas will be much easier to get parts for. I searched around for months trying to find replacement heads for my 6.2 before stumbling across a machine shop that would rebuild the old ones. I was really close to pulling the 6.2 & dropping in a 383 crate motor.
