Most all of the TH400's I have had or seen are short shaft slip yoke (car tranys) 60's and 70's models
Actually the two I have are from 74 and 75 GM trucks that had big blocks in front of them.
The first TH400 or should I say 475 I built to sit behind a stout 454 in a 71 elcamino, still runs today was a short shaft. I think that 475 was from a bread truck. Had straight cut gears. Love to hear that trany whine. I think Impalas had the long shaft's 400's

Steve

Yep, the straight cut gears are noisy as hell, but strong as hell. If you ever want to find one of those, check motorhomes and old ass school buses that used the 400 before they got smart and used Allisons. Allisons are actually very similar to the 475.

Cool, that's a fancy one too. Even has lights. Is it hydrostatic drive too, or a standard gearbox?

Standard gearbox. Those arent the right lights. Supposed to be round headlights not square.

Great, another thread from the past that reminds me I haven't got the things done that I want to, lol.

Besides the Bolens in the original post, I've also got a Cub Cadet 127 and a Cub Cadet 147... that all need work done so I can enjoy them again.

If I’ve learned anything from recent projects, it’s to only break small pieces off I can tackle in a week or so at one time. Especially now with a job on top of my company...

Selling my company this month if the deal goes through. Then I’ll be a working stiff for a while...or I’ll be doing both...

@Frankenchevy Gee Jeremy, when can I pick it up??........AND you WASHED it!!!!!!
Sorry it’s a keeper. For now, many of the parts are still available for this mower despite being 30 years old.

Bring your mower by anytime you’re in the area and I’ll clean it up for you.

I don't have it anymore, we got rid of it when we moved. Much smaller yard here and just a front drive 21 incher to keep things trimmed. Kooper, my Grandson, does our lawn for us. He made a deal with my Bride to mow for 2 years to pay back the Cowl Hood she bought him for his S10. Works out well for all of us

I have an 88 white that’s in nice shape(mint) I can post for your pleasure, whoever Dave is. I also have a couple modern John Deere’s and a 63 white but that’s ugly and not running.
Closest thing to that is a restored model H John Deere

That's one of the better B&S engines. The IC (Industrial and Commercial) engines had a cast iron cylinder instead of aluminum and wore for a long time. At least to the best of my memory.
