i have some craftsman 3 ton jack stands, but even at tallest height they are too short to reach the frame of the truck so i can get the wheels off the ground and the driveline unloaded. i want to do u joints, and if i need to replace the rear end i need a way to get it suspended, ya know?

what does everyone else use? not wanting to spend a small fortune, but will spend some money to get something that will work.

6 Ton Steel ones from HF when they go on sale for $29.99 or $34.99. DO NOT buy HF 3 tons or the aluminum ones. They're not strong enough. The 6 tons are great for our squares. I also used them on my 93 E350 Box Van and they held it up just fine.

Or use the 25% off coupon that's good for today and get them for $38 now.

The 6 tons are certainly taller and if you put them in the right place, like under A arms, and under rear axle tubes, they're tall enough. Not sure about lifted trucks and big tires though.

rear axle tubes? that won't help if i need to remove the entire rear axle. the 3 ton ones i have now are tall enough for that task. I need something to set the frame on
i am probably overthinking this. maybe i will just go pick up a 2x8, cut it into 12" pieces, stack 4 of them together (screwed or nailed, not loose) and then set the jack stand on top. would be cheaper than buying new jackstands that might still not be tall enough. those harbor freight 6t ones are only 2-3" taller than what I have currently

Do what you have to do, but on those 3 ton stands, DO NOT extend them. Just keep the extensions all the way down and use the stands that way. Really, the 3 tons are not strong enough for our squares. Guys have bent them over. Those work good on Honda's and Toyota's but not a full size truck. Not worth the risk.

In the past, I've also taken landscape timbers since they're so cheap, like $2 each, and cut them into 8 one foot pieces, 2 this way, 2 that way, 2 this way etc, and made me 2 towers nailed together with landscape timber long nails. IIRC, it took me 2 timbers per tower for a total of 4 to make 2 towers at the cost of $8. If the timbers aren't on sale, then they're $3 each and you're looking at $12. I have even been 3 Timbers total, using 1 and Half timber per tower.

two cement blocks set side by side, with a couple of 2X6s set side by side makes mighty fine blocking, just be sure that the cement blocks are not laying on their sides, keeping the open ends up is where they have their strength. You can even stack them two, three etc. high.

I bought a couple old used and really big jack stands, I think they are meant for medium duty trucks. I also have some big logs that I keep around because they make good stands (standing up, not on sides).

i was thinking about this today. if i need to remove the rear axel, i supposed i could always just take the wheels off (have to anyway) then lower the frame onto some jack stands.

I am really really good at overthinking
