On these cooler days I'm noticing that my tranny does not want to work until the engine is warm. Once the engine is up to temp it's fine. Any thoughts?

That makes sense...the fluid needs to warm up a bit to circulate. The internal valves might stick a bit with colder temps. When my truck hasnt been started in a week or so, when shifted into reverse...it takes awhile to move, regardless of the ambient temp.

32 year old trans possibly never changed or serviced. check the fluid color, clean the dipstick on a nice white paper towel. If it looks brownish or black my psychic friend forsees a trans rebuild in your future. If not, it is likely sticking valves in the valve body. You could undertake removing it and cleaning the valves and ports but DO NOT get it wrong on reassembly. I put one spring in backwards, wondered why it wouldn't move in any gear and ended up replacing a clutch pack.

Fluid is very a very bright red. Now I'm totally lost.

That's exactly what I'm experiencing. I do not drive the truck often and it does not want to go into reverse.

Also tranny is old and tired, lip seals aren't soft anymore and when it's real cold they become hard as a rock, and until they warm up and soften up some there's hardly any apply pressure.

My transmission was completely overhauled...the only item that is original is the housing, so age isn't the issue with mine...just lack of use

If reverse is going away more than likely 1st gear is going too. Take off forward while the trans is cool in L1 and see if it slips. If it does shift into L2 and see if it pulls better. If it does the low/reverse clutch pack is going away.

To rebuild, or not to rebuild. That is the question. I lost reverse today and the truck drove as if I were stuck in first gear. It's a miracle I made it back up the mountain to my house.
