Installing windshield in a Squarebody

My first time installing a windshield. I have seen on U-Tube that the rubber channel is supposed to go on the pinch-weld and the windshield installed that. We have been trying that method and broke two windshields. I always though that you put the channel on the windshield and rope the windshield in. Why the change?

I've never heard of installing the gasket on the pinch weld first.. My guess is you've been watching the wrong video.. Just because it's on the internet doesn't mean it's true, or in this case, correct.

What's causing them to break? What's different between your experience and the videos you've watched?

Putting the gasket on the pinch weld first, and then fitting the windshield in place is the correct way. At least it worked for me.

Make sure you have the appropriate hand tools (eg plastic pry bars and a round nose pick).

@sidschev is right though. I've installed exactly one squarebody windshield and NEVER AGAIN. Well worth paying someone to do it.

I helped the glass guy put my windshield in and he put it on the pinch weld first and used the hook tool like in the Precision video.

Pinch weld first yes, glass second as stated above. We had to do ours twice because Easton chose a one piece gasket first and once installed had large gaps and leaked everywhere. Went to a two piece and been dry ever since. Used Precision gaskets.

I told the glass guy to leave me with the lock strip. I soaked it in warm soapy water and used the proper tool.

Are you using used windshields? Could that be issue?

I can't find/buy a windshield cheap enough to do myself. I can get a glass company to install for $30-50 more than what I can find them for.

Depends on the weatherstripping. If it's the factory type with a lock strip, you put the rubber on the pinch weld and then install the glass. Then install the lock strip.

If you have the aftermarket type weatherstripping without a lock strip, you have to put it on the glass and then install it with a rope.


I've never had trouble getting the glass in, it's just the lock strip that's tedious. But certainly doable, even without the proper tools.

I have one of each, but I think I will have the pros do it - if they break it, they replace it, but if I break it, I have to replace it.

Do you have the correct gasket? Trust me they all look alike. I supplied the glass guy with the new gasket I bought from LMC. Vracked the windshield. Glass guy came back with new glass and his gasket and it went right in. The two gaskets were close, but you could see differences.
