First time I bought gas for a lawn mower it was $0.25 / gallon (1968). In 1972 with the oil embargo it went up to $1.50 and it freaked me out! : ) I was driving a $30 1965 VW bug getting 30 mpg at the time.
Gas in 70-71 was 19.9(regular) at the cheap station when the gas war was on(2-3 weeks before a 3 day weekend). In 74, gas was mostly under 50.9 at the cheap places, at least here in SoCal

Think this may be what I'll go with as far as the next move....

It'll either be the regear, or the PROM chip upgrade... I just wanna raise hell

STOOPED power robbing 3.42s.
I did some pulls w/ my buddy down my road recently to much shame in my part!!!
His little stock cavalier, with just a tune on trans and motor, he outdid me....... But not on the low end ;)

Either power brake and getting some "pre load" and launching, or launching from a dead stop, I could leave him 1st and 2nd gear by 2 car distances, but that little 150hp fiberglass shitbox out ran me after I hit 3rd gear....
Jesus.

I told him from the beginning I knew he'd outdo me because of the weight differences, or more so power to weight ratio.

A tuned 2.2L motor in a little... What? 1500 pound fiberglass bodied car vs a big heavy, solid steel truck (unsure of weight), making 330 HP, I knew I didn't stand a chance on that one!

Now as I look at what you are doing. Do you have to drive 85 everywhere? Maybe try 65 70 hwy cruising? I am now thinking you can go 4.56 if your motor and trans are healthy and don't always cruise at 85. Then you would have a peg leg peeler if you don't throw in an LSD or locker.

Out of curiosity, because this came to my attention recently, I feel like my suburban after the trans swap doesn't take off as fast anymore, seems sluggish, so I must ask, is it possible that transmission could be a car 700r4 and has a slightly higher geared 1st gear?

Since we're on the topic of ratios.

Funny you say that... I was passing everyone down highway 40 yesterday on the way back from my honeymoon.... (65-75 zone)
F that, I had speedo pegged several times, usually running 85-90 mph
Still said "just married" on the truck....

People probably thought I was on a death race to hurry up and get home and jump in the sack with my new bride going that speed down the highway LOL

I’ll add my input. First, will you always run 31” tires? If you back down a size or two in the future, that’s something to think about. I would recommend 3.73, unless you’re towing 4 days a week. Which you aren’t. BUT, since you already have 3.42, the difference you’ll feel probably won’t justify the expense and labor to go to 3.73. So, knowing you, it’ll be 4.10.

I'm now running 34" ties on my 91 Suburban.....5.7 TBI, 700R4 trans and 3.42 gears. It is a bit sluggish on starts but cruses on the highway at 65-70 at 2200 rpm. I need to be pulling a trailer some so was thinking the 4.10 would be the way to go also. The tires are a bit tight in the fenders.
