The ignition system isn’t fused. Power for the ignition system comes off the ignition switch and goes directly to the distributor on a heavy gauge pink wire. That same wire also powers everything on the fuse box that is powered with the ignition key in the run position. Things like wipers, heater, turn signals, etc.

I think the thing he is thinking of is the ignition switched accessory bus where you can add a circuit OR the generalized area of the fusebox that is powered with ignition on.

I dont see a pink wire connected to the distributer I see a blackish orange wire one that goes to a terminal on the distributer labeled bat which I take it means battery. I see a green wire that goes to the tach terminal. And another group of three other wires: brown black and red. Which should I disconect to disable the ignition? I just want to be able to crank the engine.

Unless someone has done some custom wiring or wire repair, The blackish orange wire your describing was pink 25-plus years ago. It’s just faded from dirt and oil contamination.

@Matt69olds is correct. The circuit is not fused. It’s on a switched circuit that is supplied with power only when the key is on. From the block on the firewall it should be a heavier gauge pink wire to the BAT terminal on the distributor cap. Depending how many hillbillies have had their hands in there the wire could be any color of the rainbow, but was pink from the factory.

It would be helpful to know what year your truck is and what you’re trying to do. Wiring diagrams are available on this site and in most Haynes and Chiltons manuals. I’d be glad to help you out, but would be helpful to know what year.

the IGN fuse is for tapping into ignition switched power source for accessories etc. has nothing to do with diestributor igniton etc. it is for the male spade terminal in the fuse panel whe you use then to run accessories added on to the truck, like power locks or cruise or such.

some IGN ports in the fuse block are fused and some arent.


normally the unfused ign terminals in the block are labeled as unfused. unless the lettering is worn off.

if you pull the IGN fuse then the IGN ports that this fuse are protecting will then be dead.

If it's an HEI distributor just pull the Bat wire off and the engine won't start. It will remove the power supplied to the ignition.
