Ignition Cylinder

my Ignition cylinder is starting to get back in my 77 Scottsdale K10. How difficult is it to replace? I’ve never done anything like that before. Thank you!

If you mean the lock cylinder, it's not too hard to replace, but you need to pull the steering wheel to do it. Most auto parts stores loan specialty tools. You will need a steering wheel puller and a tool to remove the lock plate under the steering wheel.

I just did mine. I didn't have a puller, but was able to rig stuff together with stuff in the barn. But I did have to make a couple tools. (5 minutes total time invested in tool making). YouTube has several videos of how everything comes apart and goes back together. I suggest taking pictures or notes as you go. There is definitely and order of stacking parts back in.

I could make my own thread.. but just to tack on.. anyone know why a key would be stuck? I can remove the cylinder and replace it all day, but I cannot turn the key to "LOCK" which allows you to pull the key out. My truck doesnt take to the road so Im not worried yet, but one day ill want to. Ive tried lubing it up while wheel was off to no avail and even a little force.

Sounds like the steering wheel 'lock-ring' is bound up on the lock pin.

Try moving the steering wheel in one direction or the other while turning the key back.

Im an idiot.

It was the damn lever. I never knew that was for removing the damn key.

My first car was a gm and it had the lever, but it must have been broke and It wasnt necessary. I could pull the ignition back and out with no problem. Then my cousin complained about his trans am having to push the damn lever. I was like "what" and I tried it. It worked. I feel stupid.

Another question, how do you permantly destroy this said lever.

Ha, I was in the same situation except I spent about 30 minutes making a steering wheel puller from scrap metal/hardware, another 20 minutes fixing it after it broke, and then another 15 minutes to drive to Autozone and get one there.
