found aluminum shavings about 4 1/2 inches long that are curved

Any chance of posting a few images of what you found. I've never seen - or heard of - big pieces of metallic debris in the pan of an engine that hasn't suffered a catastrophic failure (i.e. has not spun bearings, thrown a rod, etc.) and was still able to run.

Sorry man, we all sympathize.

I have. 4 cylinder Isuzu engine lost the thrust washers and allowed the crank to move back and forth wearing the ends down. Ran like a champ with 300x miles

Talked to an engine shop and they said it is most likely a spun cam bearing as they are jacketed in aluminum

That does not look good. Hope your engine is still rebuildable.

Ok, they say a spun cam bearing but how is the engine running? I know gauge indicates low oil pressure but its worth it to me to change out the oil pump and see what it does. I mean unless its audibly knocking like hell. New oil pump could make it last another 100,000 miles who knows

only reason I say that is because I've pulled stuff out of old pans in engines like that before, and nothing was ever wrong as far as I know, the engines were fine and I continued driving them

I sure hope so! Haha I'm putting the new pump in and I have a mechanical oil gauge I'm going to hook up I also have a compression tester that I'm going to check them out just for the hell of it but I'm hoping for the best but preparing for the worst

well im F@#$ed, changed pump didnt change oil pressure and had to drive home. on my way something let loose and now it sounds as if a pistion is slamming into the valves and it has zero oil pressure now and smokes so if anyone has a used running 454 for sale that would be greatly appericiated

Damn! Sorry dude it was worth a shot. You may have to settle for a small block in the meantime of finding a big block...I don't know about up there but down here they are not as easy to find in running condition

I have the opportunity to rebuild the motor as my friend runs an engine shop should I try a rebuild or go with a different motor? What are the pros and cons of each?

You can't make that decision without first taking it apart and assessing the damage.
