Used to do these ALL the time @ dealer got it down to 30-45 mins.I like the pin puller you made with a socket.Did you replace the canceling cam, looks like it was broken?

Wagonman, talk to me. Why does my ignition switch function without the key in it? Something I did on re-assembly, or is something broken in the switch and I just need to buy a new switch?

Unless you forgot to put the retaining screw back in, it's just plain worn out. Does it also not turn back to the ACC position?

It is fully functional without the key in it.

That is a badazz write up John. Informative and plenty of pics. Sure glad you did it too. There is another one out there on net from that asshat and I'd never send anyone a link for his sorry parts sellin ass to make a nickel and get the recognition. Now WE have a "go to" thread for this somewhat common problem on GM tilt columns. I need to do this on the K1500 too. It's loose. I want to do this and put a 4 spoke steering wheel on like K10 has on it already.
:waytogo: Good Fuggin Job !!! Go For it. Have a beer and go fishin !!!

Oh, yeah, you mean where the horn wire plus in right? Yeah, I got a new one. I got to get my hands on a new push rod for the high beams though. I bent mine and can't get it to work right now. :sad72:

Nice write up, I had the laptop sitting on the seat next to me as I worked. I have a glitch upon reassembly though and it's probably the same one austinado ran into. The ignition will turn without the key and also the steering wheel doesn't lock into place. It has to be something with the black cam and the rod above it. It seems like the cam should move the rod out and engage the locking plate when the key is turned but it doesn't move. I didn't take this apart, it comes out as an assembly, but the toothed slide below the black cam came out separately. And what about that spring, is that sitting in the right position?

Edit: Spent some time looking through the link on post 46 and I've got the spring wrong. I'll get back into it tomorrow.
