Not too different than a lot of places in the US.

Pretty much like the photos show, I guess. Iirc, they were shipped dry.

I've always been curious... obviously they had to have been shipped without fluids. But how did they get them transported to those ramps? Surely they weren't toting around brand new cars with a forklift.

Unless they drove them there with no oil. That could explain why those cars were oil burners, lol.

Negative.

They were fully loaded with fluids.

All of the specific components (brake master cylinder, battery, coolant overflow, etc) were specially designed and compartmentalized to hold fluids even when tipped for shipping.

There are a couple different ways to assemble the front end sheet metal:

There's "buck build", as shown here, where the fenders are installed to the radiator support and then brought to the final line as a unit (I think some Camaro plants did it with the hood attached as well).

Then there's "piecemeal", where the radiator support is placed on the frame loosely, and then the fenders brought to the vehicle individually and bolted on. That's how we did it when I ran the Fender Set area in Flint on Line 1.

The techniques would come and go as they fell in and out of favor. In fact, at one point, Flint Line 1 did piecemeal and Flint Line 2 did buck build. Same product, built under the same roof, with two different assembly processes.

According to the Consumer Price Index a $50,000 truck today is $9000 in 1973 money.

Hmm..

In 1973 my dad was making $11 an hour doing HVAC work. Dad bought a new '73 square plain jane... 2x, 307, 3 speed on tree, armstrong steering, painted bumpers... paid something like $2200 cash. This was in Chicago. I learned how to drive in this rig.

I went with my brother to Al Starnes Chevrolet in December of 78 and we left with a new 79 K30. 400/400. He got it for $9000. They through in a step bumper but we had th install it.

That sounds about right. In Canada 1978, a fully loaded Silverado 4x4 shortbox was 10K.

I paid $9954 for my '87 shortbox in September of 1986, with the employee discount.

Still had to pay $525 for the destination charge, too, even though it was 9 miles from the assembly plant to the dealership. Drove it off the end of the line and to the shipping building myself.

That first pic, those are all 3/4 ton Burbs with the full float rear axle... with factory cab lights? ...and a dinky little bumper hitch on a 3/4 ton? What's up with that?

Cab high running lights were required on all vehicles wider than 80", but were freely available on any other vehicle via RPO U01.

You could order them on whatever you wanted.
