@89Suburban and I were having a discussion and are hoping one of you may know the answer. What determined if a square got a hood ornament throughout the years? Was there a particular RPO or was it random?

I feel like there was a thread about this exact same topic 6 months - a year ago. I don't know the answer definitively, but IIRC the general consensus in that thread was that it was not a specific option or part of a specific appearance package or anything.

Maybe @Keith Seymore knows? If not him I don't know who to ask lol

I think it's one of the appearance packages, I'll check the SPID sheet on '84 K1500 Sierra Classic tomorrow and see if there's anything that seems hood ornament related. It is possible that they were just applied at random though.

My '85 C10 Silverado seems to have every exterior trim option, except for a hood ornament.

I was under the impression it required a two tone paint option where the center was the different color and had the decal break the line, not the one where the roof and below the belt was the different colors.

Edit, reviewed R/V Pickup, page 32 of the options book,"Exterior Decor Package" ZY5, includes two tone w/ body striping and hood ornament. Also shows part of 6.2 diesel option.

In addition to appearance packages, if you got the 6.2 oil burner, you also got the the hood ornament.

That is possible, though every square I've personally owned had an ornament, and two were the two tone as you described, but my K5 was straight black. Possible it was repainted I didn't know much about it and didn't own it long, it was my first square and I was young and it was a turd. They were all Silverados (well the GMC was high sierra or whatever they called their version of "Silverado" in '87)

Seems to be the general rule, but it looks like the 1985 only ZY6 paint code got them too, like the truck pictured in this brochure:

This is the last thread where we were discussing the exact same topic. @AuroraGirl posted a picture of an old brocure where it says the "exterior decor package" included the hood ornament. I always thought that was just part of Silverado trim, but maybe not? My '87 Suburban does have the "exterior decor package", according to the window sticker I have it's ZY5, on a completely separate line from the YE9 "silverado equipment".

I have had two different '85 Silverados. One had the hood ornament, the other did not.

I edited my above post, just not before you read it lol. ZY5 is "exterior decor package". Look at the RPO codes on both of your trucks, if the one with the ornament has ZY5 and the other does not, I think we might have our answer?

Edit: Oh now I see you said you HAD two trucks, as in you don't have them both still. If anyone has multiple squares laying around some with ornaments and some without (@AyWoSch Motors I'm thinking maybe you lol), go look for ZY5 and compare

My first square was an original 1 owner 1982. Solid black Silverado with manual windows and doors. It had the hood ornament. Only part of that truck that I actually still have.

I honestly can count the number of times on one hand I have seen that paint in person.

Everytime you think you know it all.....:pokeowned:

These are the reasons why I am confused on this subject. Seems super random

I've owned two unmolested Silverados, an '84 and an '85. Neither had a hood ornament.

One had solid paint, the other had two tone paint. Neither had the ZY5 "exterior decor package".
