I purchased a hood emblem for my 1980 c10 Silverado. Found out it is part of the zy5 (I think) exterior appearance option. It is a GM approved part but it came without directions or a template. Two quarter inch and one half inch hole are required. I would like to get it right the first time. I hate drilling holes in good vehicles. Does anyone have any one on their truck which would give me guidance on where it goes front to back? Or point me in the direction of someone who knows. Surprisingly, there wasn’t a utube video on it.
Thank You
Tom

Here's a 80 hood, measured from the cowl edge with the tape pulled tight. I can get ya different dimensions if ya want.
I have to say the large center hole looks kind of odd to me, but I'm pretty sure it's original.

YOU the man! That is perfect! 4 feet to the center of the big hole is close enough, if not spot on. The hole looks correct and that’s what worried me. There’s no margin for error on the sides.1/8” on either side. Have to go 1/2” bit max, then elongate it with a dremel to 3/4 long. I’d be willing to bet that the big hole in the picture is close to that.
Thank you

I wish I didn’t have a giant kink in my 80 hood :( us 80 peeps have a unique year and if I had a gmc hood ornament I’d do that before putting a brake line LOL

@DanMcG,

47 1/4" first bolt hole, 48 1/8" big hole and 48 3/4" last bolt hole. That's what it looks like to me.

Everyone!

You do know what the hood ornament is for don't ya'? Or the rib down the middle of the hood or anything like that, the older the vehicle the more pronounced the center line or ornament on the hood. Our trucks have the double rib down the middle. Most cars had a chrome strip down the middle of the hood.

When I was in high school taking Drivers Ed, which for all you youngsters out there lasted 9 or 12 weeks, I know it was a long time though, not a couple of weekends like it is now provided by some outside source, it was a course for Juniors and Seniors depending on your birthday, 16 or 17, you had to sign up for like English or Math. They taught us what the line down the middle of the hood was for because you had to use it in driving!

And here it is: It's to line you up with the curb when parallel parking, and pulling along side of anything. As you look at the center of the rib, chrome strip, hood ornament, whatever and eyeball a line down the middle of the hood up with the curb and stop when you think you are straight with the curb, if you get out and look you will be around one foot from the curb like you are supposed to be if you did it right. Interesting, huh? I remember all that kind of stuff.

Except for the tri-five cars which didn't have a center line. But if you'll notice in '58, or '59 the car makers went back to it and it's been there ever since.

My old 77 Ltd the middle of the hood was useful for lining the car up. God knows what was in front of me. I never got into a low speed chase so I’m assuming I didn’t hit anyone
