Hi guys,

My truck has had a leak from the oil pan gasket for some years now. Finally dropped the pan and installed a new fel-pro 1-piece gasket. At the same time i replaced the rear main seal and also the oil pump and pickup because why not when the pan was down. Put new 10-30 oil in, same type as always, but now the oil pressure is way higher than before.

The new oil pump is not the high pressure kind, and i replaced the oil pressure sending unit two years ago when it was acting up.

Now im 60 psi when high idle on cold start. Drops to about 45 when engine is warm and normal idle. About 55 psi when running 50-55 mph.

Before it would be about 35-40 when cold and 25-30 when idle on warm engine.

Should i be worried about a faulty new pump?

I wouldn’t be worried about that at all.

Sounds like normal oil pressure to me. If you had worn main and rod bearings it may be lower, but I wouldn't sweat the numbers you're getting now, it's just a healthier pump in there

Perfect, higher=better every time, 3 pumps, stock, high pressure stock volume, and high volume which naturally creates higher pressure... It's been a debate amongst enthusiasts and motor builders which is best since the beginning of time... Anyway IMO you just got a pump with either a healthier spring or a high pressure spring, there is no quality control on parts from chain parts stores anymore, I only buy genuine Melling and Moroso, that's a motors hart pump !

Thanks. Heres a picture of a cold start today on high idle. Medium idle drops it to just over the 60 psi mark. About 10 degrees celcius in my garage. Stays like this for the most part until been driven for maybe 20 minutes or so, then the idle drops to about 45 when in gear at a stop sign. Still around 55-60 even when putting along at maybe 35 mph.

I think im hearing the valve train clacking a bit before its getting hot, but might just be my mind playing tricks…

That's a slight bit higher than most SB I have seen but not high enough to worry about. After all, it's not a Chrysler that blows oil filters off.

Those factory gauges are really indicators. If it really bothers you check with a mechanical gauge. If it were mine I would run it and never give it another thought.

That's about what Goldie runs with the high volume oil pump and 5W30 Valvoline Restore and Protect oil. After good and warmed up coming to a stop from a highway I will see 22ish to almost 30 psi oil pressure.

As someone said earlier- oil pressure is good!
Prior to the high volume pump I had a shop verify my gauge with a mechanical gauge.

Mine was dead on then so I have no reason to not believe it now.

Or in the case of a slant six, strip the oil pump drive gear.

Im thinking the same, but also that high pressure doesn’t necessarily equals good flow?

If, say, the oil filter was clogged, the pressure would still be high, but flow would be poor?

Will the gauge peak even more if pressure was 80? Or does it stop at approx 60 no matter how high psi is?
Like the fuel gauge showing way beyond full when ground gets bad.

If the oil filter gets clogged there is a bypass to protect it. Not sure what pressure that activities at, though. I am not sure how far the gauge will go but do know mines reads like yours - above 60 - when cold. Gas gauges will read past full without being bad or ungrounded and will drop back towards full as driven. Prior to the high volume pump I would get maybe 40 to 45 cold pressure and lucky to hit 30 on the freeway when warmed up. So the high volume pump on a high mileage engine -120K or so - was a science experiment.

Having lost 2 engines in the past where the lower oil pressure was a key indicator of the engine wear I know watch the gauge like a hawk.

Allright, then things seems to be as normal as they can get.

Not sure about the exact miles of my truck. Says 86k now, but not sure if it actually is 186k. Interior is pretty nice. Only real wear is the lack of cushioning of the foam on the driver side of the bench and the rubber on the brake pedal was worn through when i bought it.

There’s nothing to worry about with your oil pressure.

If it will ease your mind, next time you change the oil, cut open the oil filter. Look in the pleats, if you see no metallic debris, relax. Use tin snips to cut the filter open, it’s hard to tell what is engine debris from shavings from a hacksaw!!
