The 396/402 is a total waste, they are a "big block" with small cubes, but it's still a "big block" when it comes building one, you can build an off idle parts breaking 468 for the same cost as a 396..

I guess what you mean by this is...
the 396/402 cost as much as... more cubes that actually do something.

Like in the sbc world, building a 305 for power... when a junkyard 350 will eat it up.

Probably this is why I'm such a stroker maniac, BB or SB.
Anything I look at (mills, chevys only) would need a crank grind and pistons so why not spend a few more
bucks (not always, wait for it..) and stroke the bitch (no offense to women, or bitches).
If you're not in a hurry, a few months of diligent online searches can net you somebody's parts never got used...
I found my BB 496 parts way cheap... like half the price anywhere else. This came after a few months of watching
kijiji (canadian craiglist).

I had a 72 caprice 2 Door when I was 18. 402 th400. It was a 1 tire fire machine. 120mph speedo was not near enough . Spun a rod bearing at 128k miles. Installed reman crank in it and sold it at 140k miles. It was a very tough ride.

Wow, what a thread this has turned into. 8.1/Ls etc ! ;)

I just need a rig that will give me the power I need when loaded on the flat bed at 4000lbs +/- in 4x4 low in the sand/marbles and then maintain highway speeds on flat ground for 5-7 miles. While all the advice has been considered, I'm still thinking just keeping and doing a light over haul on the 396/402 might be the ticket. I'll keep researching piston/cam/head options since we seemed to have strayed away from my original questions..... ;)
