So, I’m thinking about buying or building a headache rack for my truck. I’ve looked at the back rack brand and I like them, but I want to see some others as well. So if you have one, homemade or store bought, let me see them. I’ll probably use it to mount some lights and maybe a cb antenna as well.

I've had a design in my head for years, but never have built one yet. What I envisioned in my head is similar to the one of the Back Rack types, but 'cleaner'.

Have built several over the years, narry one pic of any. One thing I did learn, if you put expanded metal in them behind the back glass, do not paint it white....or not that next to the back window. If it needs to be white, paint it white, the put masking tape on the expanded (after good and dry of course) push it down in the diamonds then paint the front black, mask it right and can't tell from the back the front is black. I also need to build one for the 81, it will have bed rails as well....

This an option for the right person, ranch rig or cattle hauler. I've seen full roll bars and bumpers made like the inner design on the pic which I think is too much and dangerous. Definitely unique if it's your style and you're going for the wow factor.

Otherwise the one in the picture isn't too bad in my eyes and still functional.

I also met a guy with some 6.0 power stroke ford and he had his exhaust built into the headache rack , he made an x with like 2x8 Rectangular pipe and straight out of the top of the headache rack. I thought it was badass but I wouldn't want diesel egts in my headache rack.

I don’t have a slider, but if you’re good you use the wind out the side window to your advantage and beverage containers still make it in the bed.

Build it with aluminum, leave it raw. After a few years when it gets oxidized, just buff it with compound and electric buffer. if you need to add anything to it later, brackets or that aux tranny rad, or tool holders, go right ahead. If you make it from steel it will rust eventually. If you plastic coat it, you're stuck with what you got. Even plasti coat gets little cracks or has little voids (like around welds) where it will start to rust.

Here's mine, also has detachable bedrails, twin towers at top are drilled to mount twin Firestick CB antennas.

Those louvered racks interfere with the beer can window.

I like those, except for one detail. And this is probably me being way too picky, but I don’t like the little towers that stick up over the cab. I know they’re there to keep ladders or pipe from sliding off the side, but I won’t be hauling anything like that so I’d prefer it to be flush with the top of the cab. That’s just personal preference though. Oh, and I don’t have a rear slider so the louvers wouldn’t sow me down lol.
