Fuel Tanks

Hey guys, so I punctured a hole in my tank while offroading and want to replace new off RockAuto.com, but am stuck which tanks should belong there from OEM. The short bed k10 has one tank installed on the passenger and looks like a 16 gallon. Can ya help me which do I get? BTW it has a dual tank setup

I believe the tanks on both sides are 16 gallon tanks

Thanks, I just want to make sure its not one 16 gal on one side and then one 20 gallon on the other? Also should they both be steel or one plastic, one steel?

I thought all short bed trucks had 16 gallon tanks. The long bed ones then were 16 gallon standard and 20 gallon were optional. Original tanks were steel.

The plastic won't rust, but don't know how durable they are. Never had a plastic tank.

20 gal will not physically fit a short box.

you can measure it:

16 gallon tank is 42 inches long
20 gallon tank is 56 inches long

If it's a short bed, it's 100% a 16 gallon. I'd stick with steel. The new ones have a rust inhibitor on them.

I've had a '78 K10, '77 K20 and my dad's '79 K15 and all 3 have dual 16 gallon tanks.

Wonder what percentage had 20 gallon tanks in them.

My long bed had dual 16s that were rotting out. I added dual 20 gallons when I replaced them, though.

Nope, seems to have been optional. The '79 k10 long bed I had in high school had a single 16 gal. Owned an '84 k10 long bed about 12 years ago that also had a single 16. And the '87 v20 I have now has dual 20's.

Long bed with a single 16? Yikes! Bet you knew the gas station folks pretty well. lol

IMO, if you have the opportunity to get dual 20s, do it. You'll never regret having a little extra gas.

Lol. Never really thought about it back then, never had the money to fill 'em up anyway when I was younger.

Well IMA go ahead and get both original dual 16 gallon tanks since gas is cheap anyways @ $1.62 and I don't drive it far either. Thanks for tips
