Fuel Tank Size

Ok, so I ordered 2 new fuel tanks for my 1987 V10 long bed with dual tanks.
I ordered 2 of the 16gal ones.

So then my lmc catalog comes while I'm waiting, I'm flipping through it, come to fuel tanks, and it says that long bed trucks come with 20gal tanks!
Sonofabitch.

So I'm checking forums (mostly this one) and can't really get a total consensus except that about 95% of people agree with LMC. A couple people said '"I've seen 16s on a long bed like once". One guy said "nope, 1986 they switched to 16s". One guy says "my 86 long bed came with a 20gal" etc etc.

I get home from work today and measure, and it definitely looks like a 16gal. Then one of my tanks came in, and its confirmed. I have dual 16 gal tanks stock. (thank god).

But what the hell is the answer here? You guys are the experts, so I figured I'd ask.

Yep 20s. My tanks are for an 87 and they’re 20s , so that 86 bull is nonsense.

Perhaps you could get them either way, I don’t know enough about them. Maybe they were already replaced at one point. I’m sure it’s one of those things that you could go either way on a long bed. Wherever you got them from would probably swap them out for you if you want to.

I think there would be an issue with the filler necks, though, which was my concern.
Looking at the book, they appear to be quite different, and I didn't want another $100 in parts.
I'm like 99.9% sure these are stock, so they must have come either way?

Unless you do long drives often, I don’t think the 8 gallons is a big deal.

I’m rural and fuel prices near me are 10% higher than the Costco 45 minutes away. So the 40 gallons is nice. I filled both of the tanks the first day it was on the road, did a test drive, then topped off. It’s been about 280 miles since and the driver’s side is approaching ‘E’.

If I only drove it to my yard and back it’d make 10-11 round trips, unless something changes as the engine breaks in. There’s only three stop signs and 1 traffic light on the 28 miles there. So it’s mostly at 50ish mph and 10-15% throttle.

87 octane, even from Costco is $3.70/gallon. If I go somewhere closer to my house, 87 is over $4/gallon.

Damn. We're about a $1 less here, and I thought that was bad. I'm like 16 miles from work.
My Mazda 6 is about 430 miles on a 16gal tank.

I'd be curious to know all the different sizes that were offered. I believe mine to not be correct as it seems small unless there was a cheapskate small tank option.

This is what I'd like to know.
On my truck, some dude would have to be like "oh yeah, I want A/C. And the power options. Give me a Silverado with a a locking diff and a/c.
But $3 extra for 20gal tanks!? That's ridiculous! "

I thought the same with my 78... i was told 20 gal but from empty i only ever seem to get about 17 in it.
