Those rings! I hate them! Lol, there’s no room around the locking hub part to get anything in there unlike the k10 it wasn’t bad. When I go take it all back apart I’ll make sure to take some pics

If you go back to the last post by @AuroraGirl and verify that the rings in the last pic are the same as your retaining rings then re-read what she said about using a pic, it may start to make sense to you. You might try posting a pic of your front hub just so we can verify that you have the Warn hubs like she posted. I am fairly certain that you do, that is what came on the half tons in '87, that's what is on my truck. They are a LOT less complicated than the OE Spicer hubs that came on the '77 model.

I just ran (actually waddled) out to get some pics of my picks and my hub so we can help identify what you have and to try to help you better. I strongly recommend you invest in a set of these picks, they are more useful than you can imagine. For that retaining ring they beat the heck out of the little flat bladed screwdriver my Dad used to use on his '77.

You get the end of the ring out using your pick, then a small flat bladed screwdriver between the ring and the outer hub and you have it going your way.

I just checked the Harbor Freight website, the set of picks in the pic (I love typing that!) is $1.99. I don't recall ever getting a tool as useful as this set for $2, not ever.

I do not like that we keep telling you, "Buy this, Buy that" but sadly if you are going to run an older vehicle you have to be willing to invest money in tools and parts and invest your time. Or else have a LOT of money and very, very good mechanic.

Oh trust me when it comes to tools majority of the time I love expanding my collection lol. That’s exactly what my hub cover looks like, you turn it almost a full 360 to change lock/free and the sticker with the red arrow indicating where it is(although my passenger side I believe is missing the sticker) the 78 had hex screws and the 87 had torx T25 to be exact lol that’s why my dewalt bit set was visible in the video. Had to get my deck screw bit out.

I guess you already know this but a useful bit of information for the re-assembly: The axle will slide back towards the truck enough that getting that last small snap ring over the end of the axle shaft can be impossible. Reach around the hub assembly and use a flat bladed screwdriver to pry the axle out of the axle tube and back towards your body. That little bit of play will expose the groove and allow you to get the snap ring installed.

Do I need to take this apart? I did on drivers side but this side I can’t get the screw out.

For what you just said about the axle, I had similar problem but I think I got it in, could you use the ujoint to your advantage on that? At the knuckle I mean?

Not to set your bearing torque. You can if you want to clean and regrease the parts and it isn't a bad idea but you don't have to.

That is exactly what I am talking about. If you are able to "jam" the screwdriver into that space between the u-joint and the axle tube it will hold the axle shaft out for you to work.

I’m having problems getting the caliper bolts out right now after I get them broke free I’ll take the rotor off and get the seal out and check out the bearings. Dad replaced the drivers side when he owned it.. he also said the wobble was my new steering parts not the bearings.. the passenger side axle nut is tight by the way it didn’t just spin off in my fingers lol I haven’t broke it loose yet since I haven’t got the caliper off

Before I get back to work later I do need to know if there’s a better way to remove the outer ring from the hub so I can slide the locker out, it’s way different on this truck than on the k10, I’d say there’s maybe a quarter inch of room around the circumference. It’s not a snap ring that you have to pull open but more of a ring that you have to compress but there’s no ends on it so I can’t just get some snap ring pliers or anything. My method yesterday involved two screw drivers and needle nose pliers and lift it out of the groove and hold it then run the other screw driver around the edge as the other screw driver was pulling the ring out. I know there has to be a better method. Getting that ring out was honestly worse than playing in grease…
That's the method I use. But then again, I didn't know they make a seal puller...lol.

Current update. Painted the hub back plate just because why not ya know? Haven’t looked at bearings yet gonna start cleaning and get more pics then reassemble. The outer nut on passenger side was tight tight. And the inner one spun off with just the socket.

Outer bearing, outer race, inner bearing, inner race. The bearings look great I haven’t cleaned them yet but the race in the last photo kinda concerns me, @Bextreme04 what’s your two cents?
Edit: there’s a groove in the inner bearing race, replace?

Anyone? All I’m hearing is crickets.. storms moving in around 3, it’s 12 now. Need truck back together ASAP. Is the groove that big of a deal I need to replace the race? How do I get the race out? I don’t have a press..

Not a groove, you can’t feel it, it’s smooth but there’s a couple greyish areas? Replace? Reuse?
