Greetings all, kinda new here, made a post over in the "under construction" forum for my k5, running heavy tires 53", or tractor tires, 5 ton axles, big block power, etc. Looking to box the frame, in the process of removing the body from the frame, and then I'll begin welding the frame, welding on a sub frame, dropping a motor in, axles, transmission, drop transfer case, blah blah blah.

Anyways, about boxing the frame in, for any of you guys out there that's done it, how did you do it? Send pics, what size steel did you use? Did you do front to back on the rails? Or just the center section and no so much the back half and the front engine half. Looking for recommendations on my build, just trying to see what's worth doing, and what's a waste. Instinct is to weld the entire frame closed into a box with 1/8 plate front to back, then build the sub frame under it for the drop transfer case I bought.

Thanks guys

Try calling them. The front section should be same as 81-87 short box, but rear section would not match exactly
As it says "1973-1978 Chevy full size blazer, 1973-1987 Chevy short box pickup and the 1973-87 Chevy 1 ton standard cab long box"
What do you think would work for a 91 k5?

They’re basically the exact same frame. You might have to modify slightly, probably have to somewhat in the first place

I figured they're probably pretty much the same frame, and there's gonna be some modifications involved,

sub frame under it for the drop transfer case I bought.

What do mean by a "drop transfer case" if you don't mind me asking? Do mean a cross member that allows you to clock you transfer cases
lower?
With the added length of two transfer cases it's not so critical to 'drop' the cases and again, simply clocking one or the other tc will give you many options.
You are running two transfer cases...?
A 203/205??

Ok now I get what you're building..

There are guys running 50" tires with only 6" of lift and major body work, no leaf springs but links. So that's what I was imagining.

I hope I don't get into the forum ********* for saying this, but you might be better off looking to Pirate4x4 for advise building this beast.
Buy having said that, I hope you proceed with the build and share your fun here.

The folks on Pirate tend to heckle (even more so) the big giant mud trucks.

The K5 frames changed in '78, they kick out a bit towards the rear, but the front section is basically the same between the two. Imho, the front half is what would benefit the most from boxing anyway.

My thoughts lol, they will get fiesty over the big trucks lol
Appreciate the info though on what section to box in, I'll use that with a little research
