Alpine and Pioneer aren't even in the same league.
They don't sell Alpines at Walmart.

Well, Walmart knows what sells. Besides, if you knew audio, you know Pioneer has a cheaper consumer line that they present in those box stores. Does Alpine even still exist? Everyone I ever knew that had them in the 80's, always had them in the shop for repairs. Alpine is slightly above Kraco's category, haha! Pioneer, Kenwood, Clarion, Blaupunkt...Also, Pioneer was doing component car audio in the '70's.

I've got a brand new Alpine in my 86 K20, that has 2 bought new in 1989 Alpine amps under the seat, an 18 year old Alpine in my 03 Z71, and a 41 year old Alpine 2 shaft high power radio/cassette player in my 69 Chevelle SS.
Have had Alpines in many other vehicles over the years that were still working when I sold the vehicle.
None have ever been to a shop for repairs.

I've got a brand new Alpine in my 86 K20, that has 2 bought new in 1989 Alpine amps under the seat, an 18 year old Alpine in my 03 Z71, and a 41 year old Alpine 2 post high power radio/cassette player in my 69 Chevelle SS.
Have had Alpines in many other vehicles over the years that were still working when I sold the vehicle.
None have ever been to a shop for repairs.

Yeah, it's all about what treats you right. I've had the same luck with the older Pioneer. I bought their first under dash control unit CD player in 1985, just quality stuff. After owning literally thousands of dollars of Pioneer car audio, I only had one repair and it was adjustment to a take-up real on one of my '80's component cassette decks, after a gajillion hours of damaging my hearing! I put a new double din in my '07 Silverado crew, but other than that, I haven't purchased any new car audio, other than a Kicker 200w plug-n-play sub in behind my factory GM Bose in my '15. The new car audio sounds pretty decent, and with all the camera's, Onstar, and other crap, it's easier to just stick with it. Kicker makes some nice factory add-on's to boot. Rock-on, brother!

Blaupunkt re-uses names, but there is a Louisville model from about 1992 I'd kill to find again. A dual shaft model with CD changer controls. I had one in an XJS (steel dash was so thick it was easier to swap in a dual shaft that cut for a DIN).

I am going to completely avoid the Pioneer vs. Alpine debate and get back to the original topic of the vintage radio. In my limited experience showing classic vehicles I have been surprised by the reactions folks have to the radio/stereo in the dash. Having something "period correct" whether it is the OE radio or a vintage aftermarket is something that people notice and always comment on. It may not seem too important compared to all the other things we do in a restoration but it definitely completes the build. So, thank you to @Matt69olds for posting this.

This original factory radio with the 8 track player gets more comments and more smiles than I ever imagined it would. Every time I show the Trans Am we place an 8 track in the slot and have a box full of 8 tracks in the back seat.

Bob, I was just pullin your leg a little. Probably wouldn't have posted if it weren't for the Ford comparison.

I had a Pioneer under dash 8-Track with FM only, and an Audiovox power booster, in my 67 GTO.
Before that, it had Lear Jet 8-Track only under the dash.

I posted it because I know some people despise cutting the dash for the new DIN style radios, and since I haven’t bought a cassette since the Bush administration (the FIRST Bush administration!) your options are limited if you want a CD player in your square. To be honest, CDs are obsolete.

I posted a kenwood KRC-3006 2 shaft radio and cd changer here a couple years ago. I had that stereo in my Olds probably 25years ago, then I had it in my 81 GMC for awhile. I removed it when I installed a modern DIN radio. It had been sitting in my dads shed for probably 10 years. I was really surprised how much interest it generated, and how quickly it sold.

I just looked on classic Olds, it hasn’t sold yet. If someone is looking for some better tunes in their truck, this is a decent period correct option. Nothing says “ im embracing geezerhood” like CCR on a pioneer cassette deck, on the way to dinner at 4:30!!


As picky as some of you squarebody guys are about factory equipment, you got NOTHING on the Olds guys!!! There was a thread a few months ago about the part numbers for the proper bolts for the NOS catalytic converter a guy was installing on a 84 Delta 88 4 door. Give me a break!!!!

Yeah, I traded a fully restored/rebuilt 258 carb for a complete pristine Olds 8 track and new factory speakers for my W car! Luckily, I only had $500 into the carb, but they're approaching $2,500 now!

'80's - early '90's i'd take alpine. Mid '90's up I'm kenwood. Ofcourse, this may be what models n such I went through and my personal experiences. Not much price diff so I go kenwood except JBL speakers (long history with JBL....I know there's better out there for a lil more). All in all in comes down to the persons ear and what they want to hear.

Yeah, same here, just flippin' ya a little sh*t!! Especially with the Kraco mention! I think I owned a Super Tuner, Super Tuner II & a Super Tuner III! Those babies pulled in the stations for sure!
